Your comment suggests that he had the ability to decide if he would cry or not. He just went through a tough four months of constant campagning so I would guess it was mostly due to emotional fatigue and that a week after - the result would be different.

It doesn't matter what he does now because re-election is not an option. He can now stand at the press podium and throw his own feces at the Fox reporters. Probably would have won by a higher margin if he did throw the feces before the election.

The interesting thing about all of this is that President Obama has earned a reputation for emtional coolness and reserve (which to some people resember aloofness), so seeing him welling up with tears is quite a relevation, revealing a much warmer personality than which is normally on public view.
