Sure, let's build up the Iraq and Viet Nam war so the next time our "leaders" call for blood in a foolish war there will be no shortage of wide eyed volunteers.
That is the kind of Remembrance day Harper likes...... I prefer to consider the suffering on both sides and search for ways to achieve peace.
wigglee , you never cease to amaze me by what a complete and utter arse you actually are. You have no concept of time and place. Show some respect or please leave.

While I have only good things to say about the canadian effort in WWII, I am not so sure about their efforts in WWI, which comes to mind when the 11,11,11 is invoked. In that war, the canadians were diligently trying to kill both my grandparents (and by implication also myself). It should be said that my grandparents despised the germnans but were drafted against their will.
Based on your prior comments, that Canadian soldiers who served in Afghanistan were mercenaries and were of a lower moral quality than their opponents, what you say about these issues is of no value to any rational person.

In fact, based on those comments, you should be hiding your head in shame today.

The other funny thing is that you seem to think that the value of the service of lives of tens of thousands of Canadian veterans should be analysed in the context of your family's interests. The bad news is that you are not that important.

One thing i noticed today at the cenotaph in my neighbourhood was that it was the largest attendance I'd seen ever over the many years I've attended, perhaps 100, double the numbers that atteded in the past, from all age groups. At the 11th hour even the two dogs stopped their doggie fidgeting and stood quiet, perhaps realizing we humans had something important to attend to.

You either cannot read what was posted, because no one built up either war here, or you are just being an ass trying to impose your childish political agenda on a thread that should maintain some level of decency.
if associating Remembrance with a desire for peace instead of using it to increase military enrollment is indecent, I am filthy.

You accused people in this thread of promoting war by mentioning Vietnam and Iraq. They were not. You were being a dishonest ass.

During the sixties, hippies who opposed viet nam were hated by the legionaires....why would that be?

Even today, Harper promotes Remembrance day with the covert intention of increasing military enrollment. The "white poppy" is ridiculed and/or ignored. Meanwhile, Harper's actions towards vets differ from his words... http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news...er-two-thirds-of-applications/article4906176/

I think the avoidance of war should be more prominent in Remembrance Day meditations.

But yes, I watched the service today and teared up thinking of the uncle I never met because he was shot down as a pilot in WW2.....and the stories my grandfather told me about being in the trenches in WW1.

So lets bomb Iran!!!!!!

Yes, world peace is wonderful, but war is a fact of life and thank goodness there are those who are willing to stand in the way, run towards the threat and defend us. Remembrance Day is for just what it's name proclaims, remembering. World Peace Day was Sept 21st. Did you wear your white poppy on the 21st? Somehow I doubt it.

War is a constant fact of life because we too soon forget to learn the lessons of history, like the often needless sacrifice of young lives in pointless conflicts ( i.e. nam, iraq) waged under phony pretenses, resolving nothing......we must "remember" that too and resolve to be wiser. Sometimes war is necessary and sometimes it is wrong. We must "remember" to decide correctly.

Nobody on this thread suggested that war, or specifically Iraq or Vietnam were just wars as you accused them of.

You remain dishonest, disrespectful and babbling on your own childish agenda.

If you want a discussion on the merits of the counterculture movement of the 60s perhaps you should take it elsewhere child.

what is the point of remembering and lamenting the young lives lost if we are not going to consider ways of reducing their numbers in the future?

We need a little John Lennon mixed in with the Don Cherry here otherwise fighting and dying just become a way of life (and death) that we actually seem to cherish and wish to preserve.

When did peace become a childish agenda?

Why did you falsely accuse people on this thread of using Vietnam and Iraq to promote war? If your point is based on lies...why pursue it?

where did I accuse terb members of promoting war? I was talking in general about the way Canadians have been conditioned to consider Remembrance Day. I have accused Harper of using military nostalgia as a recruiting tool but not any terb members.

You sure are running hard from your own words. It was terb members talking about the remembrance of Vietnam and Iraq vets...not Harper. Did the PM post in this thread?

But you are too crass to apologize.
