It's hard to be have a thoughtful, critical discussion in a toxic environment. It's sad, really. Discussion on mobile devices online is rapidly dissolving into a Red vs Blue shtick.
I don't disagree, the pro android crowd is annoying too. However they are just playing catch up. I worked in IT for almost 2 decades, long before the relatively recent popularity of apple. Mac heads have always been cunts. I've met and dealt with many of them over those years and I can count on 1 hand the number of them who were't total condescending pricks. Like real life versions of fuji, otb and others on terb who think they are better than everyone else as they look down their noses at the peasants around them.

Oh, come on. Many Android fanatics are equally obnoxious. Both sides somehow equate their personal identity with their purchases and try to shove it down everyone's throat.
So that's your answer is it? You're a child so I'll be a child too?
Is this the IT forum of the american politics forum!??!

I think Apple being near death during that time (I presume you're referring to 1980-1997?) probably amplified the us vs them mentality that most people feel with product association.

When I switched to Mac about 7-8 years ago, I got a ton of shit and insults from my nerdy Windows friends. It cuts both ways.

I don't get it. My attitude is you're the only person stuck with the product you purchase so you better make sure it's a perfect fit.

I never said "if everyone is doing it, so it must be ok". I'm saying both sides are equally obnoxious.

The apple side is way worse. The other side generally isn't so much "pro" whatever, they are anti blind allegiance of apple fanatics in my experience. I've never had anyone try to convert me to android (remember I used to be an iphone user) but I get Jehovahs witness style apple fanatics preaching to me all the time. Even my close friend who converted to apple a few years ago was totally cool but within the last year or so has started canvassing me and anyone else who will listen to join the cult. I had to tell him to fuck off with his preaching. I like apple, I like their products. I just wish their cult like followers would try to be a little more objective once in a while (the same goes for the fervent anti apple people too)

Then let them hate. It's because of the blind obedience of many apple fans that breeds it.
Why should the haters care about whether or not a subset of the population is brainwashed? Maybe they should keep their noses out where it doesn't belong? Don't they have anything better to do with their lives?

I've never had that experience. And even myself in the '90s and '00s never tried to convert anyone to going over to Apple. My belief has always been that if it works for you it works for you.

Because they try to shove their "gospel" down your throat. You may not have experienced it but I have, repeatedly.

I agree 100%.. but for some reason many people on either side (more on one side than the other) love to sing the praises of their "side" under any circumstances.. just like any religion.

It's odd...I've been around the TO IT scene for almost 2 decades, much like you...and the vast majority were Linux/UNIX users first (the networking and server crowd)...then Windows (gamers and mainstreamers) and I was the odd Mac out.

I've also been in two firms (smaller offices - maybe 20+) where one of the top honchos went out and got a Mac Book Pro and MacBook, respectively...but no pressure for turning to the other team besides, wow, look at my baby! Hrmph.

TO WHOEVER THIS MAY CONCERN:

I have only one question... How long did it take Google to make and improve the GOOGLE MAPS we're all familiar with??

Let's go back to the original question: did Apple make the right decision with Maps? It's easy to say in hindsight that Apple should have stuck with Google or waited another year to release its own Maps app. However, consider the factors that Apple had to deal with:

Allowing Google to control a key piece of iOS was unacceptable. If Apple had no alternative to Google Maps, the search giant could have made high demands that Apple would have had to accept. Having no default Maps application is unthinkable for a major smartphone.
The longer Apple took to release its own Maps app, the more entrenched Google Maps would be.
The only way to test a new map application at a large scale it to release it to users. They will be able to find holes quicker than a small team of engineers.
A mapping application can only go so far without large amounts of user-generated data.
Even in hindsight, I believe Tim Cook and the Apple team made the right decision -- the only decision they could, really -- with Maps. Sure, they should have let users test out the application as a beta before releasing it on iOS 6, but that's not Apple's style. Besides, Google would have had plenty of time to dissect an Apple-built maps app and adapt its best features to Google Maps.

No they did not. I agree that making their own maps application was the way to go and I'm sure in time they'll have something comparable. But this app is too important to replace a very popular app unless it's pretty damn close to 100% complete. They should have beta tested it further. They have been using the google app for years, a few more months would wait would have been prudent.

Exactly.
There are only a few good map apps out there.
