The US Dollar is playing a game of "how low can you go". Not great for Canadian exporters. Not bad for Canadian shoppers.

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/repo...r-closes-in-on-3-above-parity/article4532010/

The Canadian dollar is at its highest level in a year, and closing in on 3 cents above parity with the U.S. currency.

Several factors are playing into the strength of the loonie today, notably the Bank of Canada's signal that its next move, when it comes, will be a hike in interest rates, and expectations of another round of stimulus from the Federal Reserve.

Markets expect the U.S. central bank to announce another round of quantitative easing - dubbed QE3 - as early as this week. Speculation is generally holding down the U.S. dollar, said senior currency strategist Camilla Sutton of Bank of Nova Scotia. Having said that, the U.S. currency is up slightly today.

"With the BoC maintaining a hawkish tone last week and the Fed expected to launch another round of QE this week, the combined impact is bullish [Canadian dollar]," Ms. Sutton said.

Given that this week is packed with events - the Fed announces its decision Thursday - the dollar could hit $1.03 this week, she added.

Canadian dollar is currently 1.022 or there abouts. A couple of years ago it got to 1.05. I suspect it is going down slightly against all other major currencies so as long as you export something that they don't produce domestically you will be okay.

Waiting for the price reduction on Californian wine which never seems to get passed along by our good friends at the LCBO.

Hopefully this holds till a go to Vegas at the end of the month. I'm probably going to be leaving enough at the tables as it is!

Hmm... I wonder if this is the reason why I'm seeing a lot more American clients lately :)

Because it costs them more as our dollar goes up?

Too bad that you can't take advantage of the deals. After all we all know that you regard the U.S. as a hotbed of lawlessness and governmental repression, surely you dare not risk your freedom by traveling to such a place.

what you really need in order to enjoy the US deals is either to live right next to the border or to make close to a minimum wage so that your [travel] time is not worth much.
If you happen to make $100/hr or more then travelling for a few hours to save $20 on some shit that you probably didn't need in the first place suddenly doesn't make that much sense.

Even from east or north of Toronto, you can easily get to the malls etc. . . in Western New York on a Saturday morning.

Maybe so but it still sure goes on

And besides that, I seen about some hotties in Ohio, only reason was one killed the other gal, or something like that. 20 years old and already busted a few times for hooking

The states aren't all that bad, down in Indy I was at a club with $12 lap dances, just topless but lots of contact, hands down your pants - over the underwear. Hot young college gals with great smiles and attitudes

You could smoke that tobacco crap as well, one dancer was smoking on stage, lol

And then the question is what are you trying to buy? An item like a[n expensive] suit is probably not gonna be a good buy because you won't have time to choose it properly. Stuff like designer/italian shoes you are likely better off buying in Toronto on sale. You also have to either pay taxes on it or cheat customs.

I am pretty big on shopping and I can tell you, all things considered it won't have much sense in the end of the day, especially if you are particular about what you want.

I go shopping about 6 or 7 times a year in Buffalo and it is ridiculously easy to cover the $40 in gas it costs me. Hell, I probably save about $10 just filling up my car before I return home.

Way more selection in terms of groceries and clothing on top of the savings. I am only leery about items with warranties.

If you live an hour away from the border that is not that big a trip.

or to make close to a minimum wage so that your [travel] time is not worth much.
If you are a dentist or a SP, then time is money and a day trip will cost you big. If you own a business or an entrepreneur then you can take a day or two off and take advantage of the savings.
If you happen to make $100/hr or more then travelling for a few hours to save $20
You can save big, but you have to know where to look.
on some shit that you probably didn't need in the first place suddenly doesn't make that much sense.

I check out the big department store weekly specials online before I hit the border. There are also stores like Cabelas, Bass Pro Shops
Northern Tools, Harbor Freight, and I also shop at Tractor Supply Company.

I just picked up an low profile aluminum racing jack for $75 at Harbor Freight, in Rochester NY. I hit the road on Friday at 10:00 am with the Sprinter truck and came back Saturday afternoon about 2:00 pm. Close to $1600 of goods, two bottles of booze. Make it easy for the border people, have all your personal belonging in one place. Tape all the receipts to the goods you bought on your trip. Got through the border in 15 minutes.

I live 25 minutes from the border and I can't be bothered going over(except to the airport or for a hockey/lacrosse game).Unless your going over early in the morning forget it.The bridge will be packed by noon, and forget about the holiday weekends.
I just don't feel like scanning the internet comparing US and Canadian pricing. The aggravation from US border guards, even when you answer their questions, they're still pricks.
Yes it's true there is way more selection down their. But I just can't be bothered, bottom line.

NEXUS

On the way into the U.S. you could use it, only crossing back into Canada with your purchases would you have to use the regular lanes (bridges).

You still have to wait inline to get across the bridge. They don't have separate lines over the bridge, just separate booths once you get over.Only bridge I know that is only NEXUS is the Lower Bridge in Niagara Falls.
