S3 is a newer generation phone than the current iPhone. Samsung appears to be a step ahead, but it will be interesting to see how the next iPhone that comes out stacks up. It tends to swing back and forth, with the lead going to whomever has most recently released a major new phone. S3 is brand new on the market and is the clear winner... for at least another couple of months!

Galaxy S3 hands down! The Galaxy S2 was the phone of the year(MWC) beating out the iPhone 4S, iPhone 4 was the winner the previous year beating the Galaxy S1
The iPhone 5 is expected around October so unless you're willing to wait there really is no competition/comparison at the moment.

The Galaxy S3 is also the Official phone of the 2012 Olympics in London. Expect to see this phone everywhere.

Iphone hands down. Nothing beats the retina screen, not even the S3. And the Iphone5 will be a game changer with a bigger retina screen.

iPhone5 is the real competitor to S3. I expect when it comes out it will be top dog for a few months.

The long run picture is less clear for the iPhone, as there are now more Android devices and so the app market should start to shift in favour of Android devices.

Also, iPhone5 is still fundamentally a Steve Jobs product, based on stuff that was in the pipeline when he was still the ideas guy. It'll be interesting to see what happens with iPhone6 eventually, which will be the first true post-Jobs iPhone. Will they be able to keep up the innovation or was it really all about Steve? Big question there.

iphone and galaxy will go back as the release dates for newer models are staggered. You will have the best phone for however many months is between release dates.

keeping up is pointless.

I only upgraded from the s2 to note because when my s2 died I had paid a monthly $13 fee that gave me 550 credit to replacing the phone if it died. I was leery about getting that deal but 13 x 12 x 3 year contract through best buy is still cheaper than 550 so as long as you replase your phone at least once you are golden.

Agreed that the iphone 5 is the competitor but not really helpful for the OP who is looking for a phone now.

Didn't iOS recently get infected with malware?

I've been using Samsung phones for over a decade and have never had a problem. I'm still learning all that my Nexus can do!

This discussion and the non-Apple advocates are for propellor-heads

The iPhone just works. It gets what you want done. Easily, intuitively and reliably. And it costs a hundred bucks or so more.

The Galaxy has admittedly better hardware and a more flexible operating system but FFS, it takes a lot of tinkering.

If you like tinkering, get an Android Peanut Butter and Ice Cream Donut Cupcake with Jellybeans on it and beat off to your nerdy heart's content!

If you just want to get your shit done easily, then go for an iPhone
Old argument perpetuated by the fanbois doesn't apply anymore. take a new Android phone out of the box and it "just works" however should you want it to do more than that, then you have the OPTION to "tinker"

so let's keep it real bro.

The hardware doesn't matter as much as the software, and iOS is in my opinion par excellence. Jelly Bean doesn't even come close in terms of user-interface intuitiveness (to say nothing of older Android versions), and there is a clear difference of culture in the respective app ecosystems. iOS apps generally tend to be of better quality on average, and the App Store fares much better against malware than the Android Market. AFAIK, there has been only one instance of malware making its way into the App Store, and that was a proof-of-concept made by a security researcher that was quickly revoked by the App Store custodians. The Android Market, on the other hand, still has issues with malware. iOS software updates also aren't held hostage by North American carriers, unlike all but 3 Android models (namely, the Nexus line).

That said, I do wish the iPhone's screen were bigger. Rumours suggest that this might happen with the next model, which should be out by early October.
This is spot on, also the developer community for iOS is much larger - the OS adoption rate of iOS makes it simpler to build apps for the largest audience.

Wait for the iPhone 5 and you'll get the best of all worlds, best HW, best apps, best media ecosystem and best design... and you'll be able to upgrade the OS as soon as it's released.

From a usage standpoint, Definitely the galaxy. from a durability standpoint, the iPhone for sure.
I have owned a samsung galaxy infuse for a few months now, and being the clumsiest person in the world, I constantly drop the thing. My screen is so cracked i can barely use it. My exhusband also did the same to his samsung dropping it ONCE from about 3 feet and almost his whole screen is cracked. I never once had a problem with this in over 3 years with an iPhone.

I think a jailbroken iPhone beats anything out there and makes it almost fully customizable. I haven't played with an S3 yet but the S2 is close enough and I didn't like it.
I don't agree. My jailbroken iPhone has a smaller screen and Apple is always trying to plug up jailbreaking holes with each new O/S release. I'm out of memory but I can't expand it. If you try get warranty work for a jailbroken iPhone (mine was a new power cable) they give you a hassle. I tried to get a cheaper cable just to power it up at work but occasionally Apple detects its not theirs and refuses to charge it.

When the new model came up - they got some apps for free that were restricted on mine just to promote the new sales. Basically Apple was saying - we are finished with your features - if you want it them buy the new one. They did it with the location & WiFi hotspot. I got it through jailbreaking but Apple's attitude sucks.

Unless the Apple logo is an attractive asset - I can't see how anyone can suggest the SII (let alone the S III) is inferior to my little iPhone. Basically - if you have to jailbreak an iPhone to get the same functionality as an S III - I can't see why you don't leap to the S III. The next iPhone 5 could have figured out how to block jailbreaking completely - then you're screwed.

I think my Apple iPhone was the best phone (for me) on the market and I had no problem letting my RIM go. This time it will be Android and likely the S III and I can't wait !

A friend of mine just got the S3, it's very nice. I'm happy with my S2. Will wait a year or two and see what's available then.

I use an iPhone 4. What do I like about it? Camera, pictures, browsing, music player, text messaging, email (and can monitor all my accounts), availability of Apps, and CROSS PLATFORM usability - in other words all my music, pictures, apps, email, videos can be viewed on my iPad - at no extra cost. My calendar updates back and forth between devices, seamlessly.

I waited a long time for Apple to get it right and they did. If you want a bigger screen, get a tablet. If you want the BEST tablet and the BEST phone go with iPad/iPhone. It just works!

PS - You don't need 3G for the tablet either, my iPhone 4 allows me to tether the iPad when I need to access the internet on the tablet and there is no WiFi available. So no extra contract cost for the iPad either. 'Nuff said.

I think you should stay with Apple - everything in Apple -works with Apple (not sure what is surprising there but if that is an ooh - ahh moment for you - good ! I would be careful in entrenching yourself to old Apple technology thinking it is the best. Apple is following now and is going to have a larger iPhone screen like similar to the smart phone that is current outselling them. And even though Steve Jobs said they would not do it - Apple has seen the success of smaller tablets and is now working on one. In short - Apple is playing catch up.

You dedication is good and as I said - I heard the same comments about BlackBerry when I moved to iPhone. Now it's is kind of hunorous to hear it from Apple die hards now that I am looking to follow technology innovation into yet another camp.
