A wise man is a man who is open to changing his mind. A wise man may take a stance on an issue at one moment in time and then reflect on his decision and determine that he made a mistake and then he moves to correct that mistake.
Only a stubborn fool never reflects on his decision and stands by his decision whether it was right or wrong.
Maybe Lastman wasn't comfortable attending the parade on the first go round and then he thought about it and though, "you know, it wouldn't kill be to be an inclusive mayor and demonstrate this to a large number of my citizens" and so he changed his mind.
Good for Lastman I'd say.
I guess you don't read the newspapers that Ford has been an absentee mayor for months now.
He seldom bothers to come to the office.
He doesn't release his schedule to the media or the public (Miller would, Lastman would)
He has declined to meet the Head of the United Way, or other visiting politicians.

Ford also does a lot of work for his constituents (or, his former constituents, I guess..). Reportedly, he returns every phone call and even shows up to see that issues are taken care of. I'm not going to go out of my way to defend Ford - he's done a lot of things wrong. He probably has the wrong set of priorities. But the claim he's an "absentee mayor" is just propaganda from the left-wing obstructionists on council who will oppose anything just because Ford proposed it.
Ford is supposed to be Mayor.
He should be doing the Mayor's job. Not returning calls to former constituents. He's got time to be out pressure washing grafitti, or making some sort of statement filling in potholes. We don't need to pay a guy 170 grand per year to fill in potholes. We have municiple employees for that.
He is still coaching high school football. While noble, I don't understand how the Mayor of Toronto's largest City (and North America's forth largest) has the time in his schedule to coach high school football. (Depending on who you listen to, coaching HS football takes between 20 and 40 hours per week for Ford.)
I think Ford is totally out of his league as mayor and he keeps going back to doing what he is comfortable at. |I think, truth be told that he is overwhelmed as mayor.
As far as him being absent at City Hall, it's not just 1 or 2 councillors saying this. Read the link I posted. He didn't show up to meet the Mayor of Calgary even. WTF was he doing that he couldn't find time to meet the guy who's at the helm of Canada's most up and coming city? Also, why does he not have time to meet with the lady who runs the United Way?
It doesn't help that - at the end of the day - Ford only holds one vote on council (and we're reminded of that constantly) and he's unable to get his agenda pushed through as a result because of obstructionist councillors.
See some of us, myself included, would say, "thank Christ for that" because Ford is fucking too stupid to have more than 1 vote.
Besides, we elected him Mayor, not Pope.
And you get goofy bans on plastic bags and streetcars instead of subways as a result.

No Ford is not obligated to go and it is his right to not do it.
BUT as a result of this choice in my eyes it makes him a poor choice for a mayor.
Why?
1) as the mayor you should acknowledge all hte people in your city
2) your family vacation time is going to have to take a back seat to your new job
3) he should realize that this is a major event for toronto and means a lot of money for businesses in the city..... and if this is good for the city then he should be there
4) it shows that he can't put his personal feelings about gays aside..... make me wonder if other decisions he makes are trumped by his personal feelings rather than what is good for hte city and his public image
I wonder does Rob Ford attend Caribana? Or do anything for Chinese New year? Hopefully he is consistant on this.
Personally, I don't have a lot of respect for this guy. His stance on pride week is one problem. The way he handled an elderly comedian approaching him in front of his ouse was another. The way he spoke on 911 was another. And the fact that he can't keep a diet.
In other words a bigotted, hot tempered, fatty with no self control is not someone that I would have voted for. But alas I don't live in Toronto.

And that is his right to not participate. But for some gays it is an annual event that they enjoy. Heck I know some straight people who make a point of partying every year.
