How come it is sometimes referred to as 'we as Torontonians' and then 'them as the black community'? The 'black community' does not want this activity to continue at the Eaton Centre let alone where they live. It's not accepted or encouraged. You seem to think so because of what you read on the news. How likely would you be to talk if there was a likelihood of retribution coming your way. I lived next-door to people who I knew for a fact were involved in gang activity. Knowing that if I minded my own business they would not so much as look in my direction, why would I put myself in potential danger by stirring the pot? Sure you'll say call the police, but I doubt they'll get their quicker than a bullet.
Think you made my point for me.

But what about calling tips in anonymously??
Sure that's an option, but do you even want the slight chance of retribution? They may have to 'get someone' and it may be you (the caller) or anyone else (innocent).

So, why aren't non black communities so full of gang violence? Some may deny it but that community DOES glamorize violent thuggish behaviour. Just look at who the role models are, snoop dogg and fifty cent.

It's a failed culture.

Post #289. Search Google Scholar under the terms violent crimes and socioeconomic status and you can find the plethora of research that shows the correlation (which I know you won't read).

It baffles me that adults who consider/portray themselves as intelligent/well-read come to ultimate conclusions (e.g. failed culture) and do not do any intelligent research besides looking at 'the idiot box'.

Here, I'll even give you a link: http://scholar.google.ca/scholar?q=...ei=JujQT6zJMfHG6AGciMB8&sqi=2&ved=0CAQQgQMwAA

snoop dog and fifty cent are creations of white corporate media profiting off from racist stereotypes. the good positive rap and hip hop don't get air time in this white society. most consumers of this kind of stereotyping music are white young people.

I was waiting for CM to suggest that the entire shooting at the Eaton Centre was paid for and staged by white men just to make blacks look bad.

But how can they retaliate when the call is anonymous. Are you saying gangbangers have ways to find out who's calling crime-stoppers anonymously??

Black communities commit far more violent crimes than other similarly impoverished people. Sorry but that community is going to have to own up to some responsibility for its behaviour. There is a cultural problem there.

Your reasoning is not only flawed, but so incomplete that it can only be considered opinion at best. Have you ever done any research into the situation or its history? I highly doubt it. Or at least you present an argument that does not show. Have you read both sides (newspapers do not count)? Can you point to any factual information that before 'blacks' and 'whites' lived together, that 'white communities' had no violence or that the increase is simply due to the incorporation of 'blacks'? You have no facts/information except the outcome. Ever heard of causation? Your argument is bland and plain and would have no place in a discussion with those who have studied it.

And yes, I have. It was my undergraduate major.

And LE has a history of building trust with the 'black community'?

Reading your rational for not doing anything makes a strong argument for the other side to continue to say "fuck them, let them continue to shoot each other".

Well.....I dont see how LE could possibly know who is calling in that anonymous tip from a payphone. Heck, you could even disguise your voice somehow, or even send them an email from internet cafe.

There's lots options if you wanna make a difference

I guess you just don't want to face the fact that blacks commit a disproportionate share of the violence, even when you control for income levels. Once you admit that we can have a productive discussion on why that might be, and how to fix it. In any case, it is part of the reality we live in, and denying it is a one-way ticket to fantasy land. It's easier to solve problems if you acknowledge them.

I will even say this: It is not "blacks" that commit more crimes. African immigrants, for the most part, don't have this problem. It's the decendents of the slave trade that commit the crime, many of them having transited through Jamaica. So there is nothing genetic about this, it's very clearly a cultural problem.

But it is a cultural problem in the black community, and the constant denials, the insistence that the black community isn't really committing all the crime--when everybody can see that it is--just doesn't help.

When a community is filled with law abiding citizens that are working their butts off to provide for their families, helping the police do their job is not important until it matters to them.

See 'Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs'. It's not bible, but does represent a rationale idea of what people will focus on. Many of those (e.g. TERBites who likely enjoy higer levels of socioeconomic status) who have thier lower-order needs can focus on looking down the hierarchy and judge others.

Sorry, but I don't think you're reading my posts. If you are, you're finding meaning that's not there. I never denied that 'blacks' (I hate using such a generalization), even Jamaicans, commit the largest number of violent crimes. If I did, point out the post. I just provided a very rudimentary set of underlying reasons.

You did too when you pointed out that many of them come from place(s) where the slave trade existed. That part of your argument does have reason and is the begining of the problem in the Western world. Now continue to follow history and you'll begin to find an answer.

Feel free to provide research that controls for income level. Does it control for stereotypes, prejudice, and stigmas? Have you ever done any real research in this area of study? I have read a ton of related work.

I would be racist for taking a bet that the shooter or target was black. I'm not racist so I will pretend to be surprised when it comes out on the news.
I thought that. Then I thought I shouldn't be racist and think that. Then I saw the perp on TV.
