You would be surprised how many university students don't think that.

I regularly hire co-op Engineering Students and I'm amazed at the arrogance some times. (Not always mind you, some times.)
On this we agree wholeheartedly. I wonder how well they succeed in the real world.

In any case so long as these folks stay in Canada the cost of their education is going to be insignificant compared to the taxes they pay, on average, across all educated people.

To me the real problem is people who get the subsidized educations and then leave to work in other countries. In that case we paid for their educations, but we did not receive the resulting tax revenues. I have long thought we should implement some system so that anyone who leaves Canada is made to pay back the cost of their education. Potentially, this should include the cost of provisioning K-12 education as well as college or university.
Even there, I'm not convinced that risk of 'border hoppers' would justify the cost of monitoring for border hoppers. It turns out that, on the high end, the risk of braindrain was pretty overstated. Most well compensated people aren't that inclined to move just to be even more well compensated. Even then, a significant portion of those people would have lifelong ties to Canada, and many of them repatriate at some point in the future (bringing their cash and experience with them). Putting up a barrier to working elsewhere would likely make those who choose to go stay completely away until the statue of limitations is up on laws surrounding their debt.

Have I ever mentioned that I used to think Fuji and "Lynn" were the same person? :)
No, no, you confused. "Lynn" and "Leah" are the same person. FUJI is ok most of the time but two sure way to tell he has lost an argument is when he resorts to personal attacks and/or thinks the IRA is out to kill him.

Let me see if I have this straight. Fuji's the one who thinks Dalton McGuinty is a competent premier, Lynn thinks Bob Rae is a good MP, and Leah....

Nah, I'm still confused.

Wowserina jim-bob. You get a pretty-big gold star for remembering Lynn. I even forget that handle :p

Life was easier when I could say stuff anonymously
.
Not one in the same but I'm a fan.

All this is happening while the Charest Gov and municiple govs is being investiaging for corruption. Asking students to pay more for tuition while you pumped billions to the Mob and dirty construction companies is a hard sell.

Personally I support free education. The students are bettering society by increasing the proportions of people who are educated and informed.

Listening to the leaders speaking yesterday at their news conference, it was clear logic is not their strong suit. $400 isn't going to make that much of a deference to getting people educated. Much of your construction fraud is done at he municipal level so the provincial government is not the only ones involved.

Future union leaders

Students threaten to disrupt the F1 race if their demands are not met.

Shows they must have missed their economics classes, and would rather bang on pots than work.

The threat also shows they are NOT very bright, the province will now be able to force the increase down their throats, because it can't respond to threats.

This bunch is obviously unemployable anyway, and should be looking for jobs at farms with other people with similar marketable skills.

LMAO, this from you? You have no idea what you are talking about with Quebec as post #150 proves. Where did you invent this notion that Quebecers thought you only went to university if you were English. The intellectual elite of Quebec in the '50's and 60's (ieTrudeau and his gang) would be rolling on the floor laughing at you so stop embarrassing yourself.
The proportion of francophones who attended university or held executive posts in Quebec was very much lower than the proportion of anglophones who did.

Somehow you are stupid enough to think if you can name a few francophones who were the exceptions that this counters the overall statistics. Fail.

But who needs statistics when you have anecdotes, testimonials, and loud people saying trust me? :p

The CBC is reporting that the renewed talks have again failed.

The government blinked and offered to compromise and decrease the tuition increase from $254.00 to $219.00 a year and the students have rejected the compromise. The lead shit-disturber student - Gabriel Nadeau-Dubois has called for renewed protests.

$219.00 a year.

What a fucking joke.

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/montreal/story/2012/05/31/quebec-students-courchesne-negotiations.html

I'm still trying to figure out if Charest is a ball-less wonder, or a master puppeteer and this is all part of his strategy to cause the students to further alienate the public.
Don't think of it as 254.00 dollars per year, think of it like a student would.

That's like 9 cases of beer ! !

Again, those who fail to see the ideological back story won't understand that it isn't about the amount but rather the idea.

I agree with you here. Consider the worst case scenario where they only get paid minimum wage when they graduate. By now, the delay in their graduation due to the strike has undoubtedly cost them far more in lost future wages than the proposed increase in tuition. Even if they did force the government to cancel the increase, they would still be worse off than if they had just accepted the increase.

Hence it must not really be only about the money?

I have always found that certain people get utility out of protesting. Thus, while I would consider spending time protesting and keeping others from attending class to be a cost, I am not convinced that protestors do. They likely think they are doing something positive and get satisfaction out that that.

While I think it may be vaguely possible to analyze political positioning in "utility" terms, that smacks of trying to use hammer to saw wood. I think you would be better served by taking a course in the humanities if you really want to understand this one, I have found that economists generally just don't "get" politics and even more so fail at understanding politics by other means.
