I'm thinking of going to Newfoundland this summer and wondered if anyone had any ideas on where to go and what to see. I'm going to drive out there, visit family in NS for a few days then go over on the ferry. I was thinking about doing a loop - start off on the ferry to Port au Basque then drive to Saint John's then take the longer ferry ride back to NS. Anyone tried this? Is there lots to see on the drive to SJ (looks to be 900 km so I would take a few days to get there). Any suggestions?

Yes, I did something similar years ago. I seem to recall a lot to see on the west coast, like Gros Morne. Not a lot to see in the middle section, then lots to see on the east side of the island. Terra Nova National Park is nice. Burin Penninsula is very scenic. There may be more in the middle section, but its likely off the beaten track a bit.

Have a great trip. The people are very special.

Don't forget the vikings up north. St. John's has good food. I found George St. a bot disappointing. Tons of little villages. I'd second Gros Morne either for camping or just the Western Brook boat tour. Gander has a fair bit of history but not much to keep you there long. Maybe one night. Besides the capital, I'd avoid the bigger cities.

You might consider flying out and renting a car. Depending on what porter has, it might be cheaper and much easier.

Make sure you go sight seeing! My friends there are nice, BUT you would be drinking all night, they introduce you to their hot sisters, you have to go fishing in the AM no matter what, and probably smoke something funny while you are out there.

Then they would beg you to please not go back to Ontario. They're beyond nice.

Mistaken Point is located in SE Newfoundland and is probably the oldest metazoan fossil site in North America and the most ancient deep-water fossils in the world.

Thanks for the ideas. Will definitely check out some of the suggestions (esp. Mistaken Bay).

Going to be in St. John's next week.
Any info on agencies or MP's close to downtown?
Bonus points if you know of one that employs Asian girls... I know... its like finding a needle in a haystack.

I've never been to Newfoundland but it must be outrageously gorgeous - Rusty fell head over heels for the place.

The only thing I would add to what Questor and Petzel mentioned: The west coast in particular Gros Morne National Park. the east including St. John's and Terra Nova National Park and the Viking Settlement at L'Anse aux Meadows in the far north of the Island, would be the Caribou on the Avalon Peninsula.

I can think of hundreds of places I'd rather go in the world.
I've been to Newfoundland.
So you're saying the reason not to go to Newfoundland is because you have been there.

There's probably some merit in that.

He's probably left such a sour taste in the mouths of the locals, they will hate many you whom come from away now. The islanders as a group are some of the friendliest folk in Canada. i wonder if they hope he won't return.

Am I surprised that you don't like it out there? With your attitude and charisma it's no wonder wherever you go nobody wants you back......................

I agree. I'd kill the lot of you to move back there, but unless you got some personal connection to the place, it isn't worth the visit. If you are driving to Nova Scotia, just head to Cape Breton and turn back around.

Just not worth the boat ride and there isn't much to see till you get near Corner Brook.
Yes Gross Morne is nice but it is a bit north of the TCH.
The viking settlement is OK but it is a long ways out and it just isn't worth it. Been there, never go back. It just does not compare to the likes of the Upper Canada village for example.
Tera Nova... you gotta be shitting me, at least not along the highway.
St John's is about a 900km drive and we are not talking 400 series highways here till you get to the Avalon. Again not much to see. Sure you can list a few spots but it just isn't worth going across the province. Although if you do go, I'd recommend Pizza Experts and Peters Pizza but I am a fat guy, also drive up to Outer Cove road.

In short there is stuff to do but it isn't different or spectacular enough to go that far out of the way. Also once you get there it is mile after mile of stunted forest and barrens to get anywhere within the province. You are looking at a lot of driving. If it were where PEI is, it would be worth a drive over from NS. If you are going to NS you will see plenty of fine natural scenery. If you are looking for a destination there is some mighty fine roadage north of Ottawa and Montreal. Mt Tremblent park is nice. I'd assume Ontario has some nice boreal forest also.

If you are driving through NB, I'd recommend taking two different ways coming and going. I seem to recall the St John river valley is nice NB highway 2, Highway 132 in Quebec just north of NB is also nice.

Living there is another matter. St John's at least, nice place, good university. Lots of snow in the winter though and if you want to buy some lettuce or other greens, you should wear a nice dress, because at least you will look pretty when you get fucked. I was there last year and bought some lettuce, was figured the store should have wined me and dined me it was so ass rapingly expensive.
I'd go back in a minute if I had the chance, but I've spent more time there than anywhere else. It is different for me. It's the closest place to home for me.
