that was no professional. a pro would have got the shot. that's what they do.
Yeah, this is true. That's the only criticism I have of Dale here--when Ford came out and revealed his true trailer trash colours, Dale didn't have a working camera or voice recorder, so he didn't capture the story to its fullest. That's a shame.

Nope. If we followed that sort of authoritarian logic then anytime any politician didn't like the way they were being covered by a particular paper or journalist, they could just throw hissy fit and demand the journalist be removed from the story "like Dale was removed from the Ford story". Very dangerous precedent. There is a basic freedom/independence of the press issue here. Ford does not get to choose the way he gets covered, nor does he get to write the stories, nor does he get to decide which reporters are entitled to write about him, or what they are allowed to say.

Dale has done nothing wrong, he was entitled to be there, he was writing up a story, it was an appropriate way to go and check the facts. It's not his fault that his subject behaves like a trailer trash.

The real story here is that Ford doesn't like the way the Star covers his lies, misrepresentations, and bullshit so he throws immature hissy fits.

Tough, if he can't take some bad press, he shouldn't be in politics.
I'm saying Dale should recuse himself, not because of pressure from Ford (which I haven't heard about) but because being associated with this circus could damage his chances of advancing his career. Other publications are being critical which could mean less opportunities for him down the road.

The reason is obvious -- he should have called 911, police or
When was the last time you called Toronto's finest? A few years ago I saw a shady character hanging around the front of my house (Yes, he was on public property, no, I don't think it was Fuji). I called LE and it took them like an hour before a car arrived. I could have been murdered in the meantime.

As much as Rob Ford is an asshole and a bad mayor, the Star is just harassing him at this point. Maybe not a criminal way, but they are going above and beyond just to provoke him. He's an idiot for letting himself be provoked, but the Star is not coming out much better, in my opinion. There's many more important issues in the city and the province than Rob Ford's weight or temper problems. It's a vendetta in my opinion, and is clouding the fact that he's a bad mayor. His supporters are using the Star's childish antics as evidence that he's a good mayor that is working against everyone for the good of the city. Not true, but the Star is advancing this argument through their childish antics. I don't believe for a second that that reporter just went to 'photograph' some property. He wanted a confrontation of some sort and he got one. Also he acted like a Grade-A pussy throughout the whole ordeal. Hard to take him seriously as a reporter (or a man) after this

Again, I'm not a Rob Ford supporter at all, though I don't think he's evil incarnate like some do, but the Star is acting a fool and needs to get back to legitimate reporting and not just 'let's tease the bear until he lashes out'. Reporting on the bear lashing out after you provoke him is not journalistic integrity

In every 'incident' Ford is the jester of his own 'Ford Follies' whether you believe he was prodded and/or aroused:

1) 'Drunken-and-profanity-laced-abuse-Gate' at the Rogers Center' where he lay a drunken barrage of unwarranted abuse upon an underserving couple which I might he add he LIED about.
2) 'Finger-Gate' whereupon two occasions he was cellphone talking while driving and when confronted by a 'taxpayers' he flips them the bird, which of course he denied.
3) 'Fat-Fuck-Gate' whereupon he harrassed, intimidated physically impeded the lawful movements and actions a Toronto Star reporter which was all caught on camera.
4) 'Marge-Gate-911-Gate' whereupon he lashed out with unwarranted expletives at a 911 operator because police did not show up to attend his immediate needs within seconds of his call. Lied about the incident, lied about the expletives used in his rant filled 911 call. He could have and can authorize the release of the tapes to exonerate himself but he didn't and won't.....for obvious reasons.
5) 'Waste-of-skin-Gate' whereupon he lashed out a fellow female councillor.
6) 'Various-and-sundry-911-Gates' whereupon he and his family have 'used' 911 as their personal 'trailerpark trash' mayoral hotline to their 'personal police force'.
7) 'Chicken-Gate' whereupon after much hubbub, lights camera action, and invited media glare he declares and initiates his 'Cut the Waist' reality show and is unable and/or unwilling to meet the challenge he defaults to his comfort mode......sneaking out for fast food.
8) And finally 'Fence-Gate' whereupon....well you know what. Resorts to criminal activity.

Whereas one incident alone or maybe a couple of incidents may warrant the benefit of a reasonable doubt and hence their subsequent justifications in the defence of this 'uncommon' man', taken in total the bulk of the evidence clearly demonstrates the sad reality of ths man.

To provide 'justification' and/or attempting to shift the blame for his actions onto others, which clearly and solely are absolutely his responsiblity, by insinuating that somehow he has been provoked into 'lashing' out like a wild beast upon all his various perceived tormentors is to suspend reality, justify his unjustifiable behaviour and give credence to this thug.

People want a mayor folks. A mayor, a mayor, a mayor. Not some thug clogging up the mayor's chair.

Aside from the the unobjective Sun, which has written a factually inaccurate opinion (we can say the Sun published lies actually), which publications have suggested Dale recuse himself? I think we can safely ignore this claim if the answer is only the Sun has.

I think somebody posted some critical National Post links as well. Even without the opinions of other papers being made public, one can safely assume (just look at the cross section of TERB opinions) there are those in the industry that don't approve.

Even still, this is an unseemly affair and being too closely associated with it and getting dragged through the mud is probably not (depending on his long term plans) in his best interests.

The only thing unseemly was Ford's behavior. The reporter was just doing the job he is paid to do and odds are his editor sent him there. The story broke that same day why should he wait a day to look at the property?

It's still light out at that time you make it sound like he was creeping about in the dark. He was there in daylight, just fairly late in the day.

I am sometimes interviewed by reporters in my job and i can tell you they regularly work into the evening. It is not surprising nor inappropriate that he was researching a breaking story at that time. Going out to look at things is what reporters do. They do not just sit at their desks from 9 to 5.

That does make the situation on the ground clearer.

Indeed he should have. It is part of Toronto's "weak mayor" system that the mayor doesn't have security as just about every "strong mayor" big city mayor does.
It was offered to Ford, repeatedly. He continues to refuse it. Of note is one of his many differing statements, in which he said he decided not to go between the houses to confront the intruder, as he would have fled into the ravine. Instead Ford said he decided to circle around so he could box him in.

IMHO trapping bad guys is what the police are for. If you choose to deal with a voyeur or trespasser yourself (Ford continues to mis-use the term and has yet to say Dale was on his property; all evidence is that he was not), getting him to leave should be the limit of your actions.

Not just all evidence puts Dale in the park area, Ford's own claim is that he was peering over the fence that marks the property line which clearly puts him outside the fence!

Ford is either too stupid to know what trespassing is, or already views the public park as his own property.

The Star is a complete and utter joke. They have had a vendetta against Ford long before he even became mayor. I think they need to look up the definition of robbery and possession of stolen property in the criminal code before they lay those allegations. What a bunch of morons

You have no credibility on this thread fuji. You have been a Ford basher since his campaign. Get lost.

First, the facts are on my side, and against yours. You can say "get lost" all you like, you will still be wrong, and I will still be right. It's pretty telling that you responded to my pointing out a couple of facts you don't like by insulting me. That's you--you don't care for facts, and when the facts are against you, you switch to insults, rather than switching your view. You start out analyzing any situation by automatically agreeing with whoever's political view you agree with, and that the facts of the situation are irrelevant to you. It's like you're a mental cripple or something, unable to process information properly.

Second, I've been critical of Ford because he is deficient, and the current situation is just yet another example of the same deficiencies that have been in evidence from the beginning of his campaign. He is belligerent. He lies. He can't get along with others. He acts like trailer trash. At the outset of his campaign I pointed out that he was a convicted drunk driver and a liar who was prone to drunken rages. Now he's behaving just exactly as you would expect that sort of person to behave.

The consistency of his deficiency is the reason for my consistent criticism.

So, it is legal to peer over someone's fence and look into their bedroom or their children at play in their own backyard as long as the voyeur is on public grounds or on their own private property? No wonder all the "porchpeople" in my neighbourhood have binoculars!

I fear that Toronto LE will arrest Rob Ford just like they arrested "Spiceman" and the "Chinese grocer". Got to keep busy justifyuing their billion dollar budget, you know.

My neighbour caught a guy spraying graffiti on his garage door once. The advice from LE was "don't confront the culprit". The police car arrived an hour late and a dollar short. Then they advised my neighbour to clean up the graffiti mess.

It's legal to peer over someone's fence, yes, unless there is some element of threat or interference that would make it criminal harassment. If the hottie next door decides to sunbathe nude it's entirely legal to pull up a chair and watch. If she doesn't want you to see her naked she should go inside her house and close the drapes.

The only reason I buy the Red Star is their career and classifieds section (apart from their entertainment section).

I refused to buy that issue on the front page.

No other Mayor has been harassed on or around their own home like Mayor Rob Ford. Let him have his privacy please.

Which previous mayor decided to quietly buy some park land from the city? There is plainly a public interest in following up on that story to see whether he is abusing his office. That includes finding out what sort of land he wants to buy, where it is, what it looks like, who else uses it or benefits from it currently, and whether it's true, as he claims, that teenagers are sneaking up to his house at night, and whether his fence is as inadequate as he says it is.

I can't see any other way to fact check that story than to go to the park next to his property and check out his fence.

Come back with some reply, insult me, whatever you like, make snide comments, turn it into a partisan issue, whatever other bs you want to pull -- but at some point try and respond how the Star, or any other paper, should check those facts without attending on the site. Moreover, since he claims in his written submission that the problem is people in the park at night, it would seem that one would have to go there at night to check those facts.

It blows my mind that people find it possible to justify Ford's behavior. It's indefensible and he brought it all on himself through his behavior and for his decisions.

I sure as hell agree that it's our business if our mayor is quietly trying to buy a piece of public land - especially since no one has successfully done so in this city.

We should ALL care ~ despite our political leanings and thankfully the Star took the initiative to inform us. Thankfully Dale took the initiative to double-check his story and even make a two line edit after seeing things for himself.

What Ford did sure appears to be against the law ~ I highly doubt anything will come of it but the mere fact that he had the phone in his possession and powered it up and used it plus from his own admission, threatened and cornered Daniel Dale on public property is enough evidence.

The heat from the media on Ford is unprecedented but it's unprecedented to have such a horribly unsuitable mayor.
