so i am looking into getting a dog to take with me in the truck, my new best buddy to travel the highways with me. i would rather adopt from a kill shelter obviously but the websites i look at don't say anything about which are kill shelters and which are not and i am looking for a reasonably lazy breed since we will be in the truck driving for 8-11 hours a day with only being able to stop for 10-15 mins or so every 4 hours.

any suggestions ?

Heard of a special breed that should be just right for you - called "Willkillsimon" or something like that...

Any litter of any breed will have a mix of low, medium, and high energy dogs. Most families should get a medium energy dog but due to the confines of a truck cab, my guess is you'd need a real couch-potato, low energy dog. Maybe even an older one.

Poms can be pretty hyper. Cute though. And it's nice that you're considering a rescue.

If you haven't had dog before though, get ready for a relationship that you'll never forget.

BTW, my advice is worth exactly what you paid for it.

i have had dogs my entire life and this last few (3-4) years is the only time i been without one. my brother has 2 and they both assault me when i get home from the road cuz they missed me. i was talking size to be medium or small because of the size of the truck but yeah energy level has to be low as well, i am thinking something spade or neutered would be best, that seems to kill off motivation for the most part.

i would rather get from a kill shelter than somewhere that doesn't kill. i was looking in the states as well. aspca would sell me a dog, fixed, all shots, de-wormed, all paperwork, rabies shot, leash, 2 bowls, collar and a bed for 140$. i am thinking if they are where i go when i get back to that area i will be taking a serious look.

Thanks for considering adoption instead of buying from a breeder.

I would like to suggest a rescue group if you don't find the dog you want from a shelter. Breeds that are low to medium energy include pug, basset hound, beagle, shih tzu, lhasa apso, cocker spaniel, bichon frise, bull dog, great dane and several others.

Jack Russels are great dogs but very high energy. Same with labs.

Also, older dogs regardless of most breeds will be lower maintenance and more than happy with short walks for bathroom breaks every few hours.

Good luck.

this all started about 3 weeks ago i was in socal and the aspca was outside the truck stop with about a dozen dogs. all the dogs were running around person to person getting pet and little snack treats from drivers and having a great time. i walked out of the truck stop and looked to my left and this one dog was hiding under a table and kinda shaking, soon as i ran out it ran at me full tilt, got me all tangled up and i almost fell. i sat there and he put his paws on my chest and was licking my face and i was liking his face back and i sat there with him for 20 mins, biting on my shoes and everything. i got up to leave and he started following and barking. the girl picked him up and he started crying hard. just couldn't pull it off that day. it was a chihuahua/shar pei mix. black and awesome.

do you have any websites for shelters that i can't find on google ? i got the city shelters and humane society. anything that i might have missed ?

Generally speaking, all you need to do is Google the breed you are considering along with the words rescue and the province/state you are in.

For example, boxer rescue ontario and you will get this: http://www.boxerrescueontario.com/

Also, if you are looking for a small breed and there are no specific small breed rescues in your area, try Googling small breed dog rescue and the state/prov you are in.

For example, http://www.happytailsrescue.ca/

Hope this helps and let me know if you have any more questions. Good luck.

thanks for the links appreciate it. good stuff on the happy trails site. they look a little more like they were horribly mistreated and need a loving home. i would rather hurt a person than a dog, so i never understood the people that hurt animals.

You're very welcome. You might also try doing a search on Facebook. Many rescue groups also have groups/pages.

Just be careful with the breed. When I was looking most of the cute tiny ones were hyper. Even small ones need lots of walks. Some dogs just like to sleep and be close to people.

My neighbor had a basset hound and it was a real couch potato.

Agreed with your choice. Better get a lazy breed like a Basset Hound
rather than a feisty breed like Jack Russel for long distance traveling.

I know it is just a movie but the Basset Hound in 'Smokey and the Bandit'
seemed quite well behaved.

Check out this link

http://www.gopetsamerica.com/dogs/low-activity-dogs.aspx

has low energy indoor dogs listed alphabetically and size and you can click on links to read more about the breeds.

Of the list I like the bulldog and basset hound as I like mid sized dogs and the way they look but be aware these guys drool.

You might also want to think about shedding/coats as the dog could fuck up your car depending on breed.

While not on the list I do like the American Bull Terrier but due to it's lineage and relation to pit bulls some say that t his is a concern as they are docile with friends but could have a meanstreak too with strangers...... not good for travel. Plus people might freak out and mistake it for a pit bull.

Might want a small dog as you will have to lug around less dog food that way.

Also how often it shits. A friends dog goes three four times a day the backyard in the winter time is a minefield.

Seems not a perfect life for a dog, but of course if you save him from being euthanized, it is better than the alternative. Have you considered a teddy bear?
