Seems not a perfect life for a dog, but of course if you save him from being euthanized, it is better than the alternative. Have you considered a teddy bear?
you would be surprised actually how many drivers got pets on the road. i would say 2 of 5 trucks has a pet now at least.

Have you owned a lot of dogs?

Just curious. Seems unlikely that someone who's owned a dog would compare it to a teddy bear.

And exploring the world in a truck cab with a human companion would be heaven to some dogs, and certainly preferable to euthanasia.

But that's just my opinion.

Believe it or not, it is the perfect life for some dogs. I know a few who absolutely love long car rides.

Simon482 was out driving his rig when he saw a sign by the road: Exotic Animal Zoo - 50 miles ahead.
A few miles pass by and he sees another roadsign: Stop in at the Exotic Animal Zoo
He drives on a little further and there's another sign: Come on into our Exotic Animal Zoo
He keeps on driving and keeps on seeing signs promoting the Zoo, so eventually his interest is piqued and he decides he'll stop in at the zoo.
So he sees the sign for the zoo turnoff, and follows the road all the way down to the end. There's a big sign announcing "Exotic Animal Zoo", so he stops the truck and saunters over to a little shack, pays his $28.00 admission, and is led onto the property.
There's one solitary cage with one solitary little white fuzzy lapdog sitting on a pillow......thats it, nothing else anywhere. Simon is very disappointed with the whole experience.
On the way out, he encounters another trucker coming into the place, and Simon tells the fellow: "don't bother going in; it's a shit zoo!!!"

And until you find the ideal canine companion you can always look
out for a sexy hitchhiker to pick up.

still not seen anything of the sort while on the road. shame cuz i am always looking. well not true, i was in a traffic jam and all the boys were creaming on the c.b about a car, i finally got creeped up beside it and it was just some hot girl and her skirt was riding up almost showing panty but not quite.

Perhaps a cat? An older cat will sleep most of the day, a small litter box will fit somewhere in the cab, and they don't need anywhere near the attention that a dog requires...

Are you looking at finding one in the U.S. or Canada? There are a lot more kill shelters in the U.S. as far as I know...but, that's not to say we don't have that here. There are shelters known to be more a kill shelter than they make themselves out to be...one such is in Hamilton. If you are driving a rig, please make sure the dog you choose doesn't jump down from the cab...it's not good for their joints to do so. Good luck and it's great that you are looking to save a dog as opposed to going to a breeder.

Hey, you're spoiling the whole life-on-the-road, poon-around-every-corner trucker fantasy image with your honest, empirical observations.

I always figured this was the deal:

i don't like cat's and one shit in the litter box would choke me out and make me toss the fucking thing out the window.

going to a breeder never crossed my mind actually. even i wanted a pure bred dog you can get them from the shelter since people get them when they are cute puppies but soon realize they don't want the hassle.

what you think it is and what it really is are 2 very different things. lot lizards are almost non existent. girls flashing as they drive by don't happen and you have to get used to spending almost every day bored out of your head and controlling the urge to run everyone off the road from being cut off every 20 mins as everyone is desperate to not be behind the truck even if their exit is half a mile away.

Hey, I do my part - always let big trucks in (actually, anyone for that matter, but big trucks seem to get screwed more). Funny thing is, I feel safer behind a big truck than in front of it. Laws of physics and all that.

Can't even count how many times on the southbound 404 where the 401 merges, some genius has managed to cut in front of a truck with 1 foot to spare and the truck can't stop in time...resulting in a crunch that clogs traffic for an hour. Sheesh.

I do appreciate that nearly every single thing I touch probably came on a truck at some point. I hope that dog companionship eases your boredom somewhat.

Also, you've probably already done this but since a significant proportion of truckers have dogs these days, have you asked any of them what works (size/breed/temperment)? Seems like that would be the most relevant source of info...
