Nice to see they mention 10 hour days, I wonder if they'll discuss breaks, lunches, etc.
I suspect they will, they have to...but what will the actual truth be?
People don't kill themselves because they work in wonderful environments do they?

However, took them awhile to let people in.
Makes one wonder if they cleaned up house before the cameras came in?
Did they take the suicide nets down? Will they show the nets up? Or will they focus strictly on the jobs they're offering (billions and billions and billions and billions of chinese that all live in such close proximity to each other, FTW, world over population)

apple buckled and caved in finally.
Guess it's nice to see that contrary to Gatorde's mantra, "Image is everything" and this just proves it. It all comes down to image and marketing.

Yeah right!!!....
Does it inspire you to move to RED China and become a migrant worker...:eyebrows:
You should watch that movie, well done and it might give you a bit of sympathy for the rampant poverty in China....

Wow!!! WTF? OTB that you?

As a side, that's what they get for fcking like bunnies and creating a mass human population.
I really dont' feel sorry for them, on top of the "need" to kill animals because of their apparent (unproven) aphrodisiacal qualities.
Maybe they should be less worried about sex and more worried about keeping it in their pants and maybe farming more foods (even though I'm sure they are now, but maybe MORE SO).

Watch from 8:19 to 9:29 (quick minute+) and this is coming from Ramsay a die hard carnivore.

At least in the U.S. there are regulations about eating young fish, crab and lobster.
Kill off the young and you kill the chances of survival sustainable long term of the species and have a HUGE impact on the food chain.

So I watched the special today (PVR).

They showed the nets, grazed over the reasons with a counsellor as to why they think people were killing themselves.
To paraphrase the counsellor "there are many reasons, one can be management" and then of course they went on to blame a fire/explosion that happened in a certain building where there was flammable powder or something along those lines.
So they didn't go into too much detail as to the reasons for the suicides, they just addressed it fairly quickly, then moved onto the explosion and then talked about pay and how they doubled the pay, etc...

It was a softball expose on the entire operation.
Of course, ABC being owned by Disney and Apple having people on Disney's board and vice-versa.
These people are slaved away, in cramped quarters and busting their behinds.

This is ignorant in so many ways...

Sorry, what's MUCH worse are the corporations that are exploiting this FACT.
Why are a lot of corporations going to India and China?
Because they can get A LOT of workers for VERY cheap, the old adage "beggars can't be choosers" comes to mind.
Did you see the amount of people lining up at FoxConn for these jobs which pay under $1.78 an HOUR?
Crammed into 7 people per room, 1 bathroom?

Sorry, it's a fact, I'm just stating it.

A Chinese guy I worked with years ago (Eng) even said his country's population is "so excessive it's insane", truth be told, I brought it up first and he shockingly agreed.
He half jokingly said that he's not surprised that there were more events like SARS happening at least once a month because of the close proximity that Chinese live in with each other.

But ya, corporations are exploiting these human numbers, me stating a fact isn't as bad as corporations paying these guys next to fuck all and pocket billions over the sales.
...just like apple.

So when people boast their numbers at how well they're doing and how they're the #1 brand, with that comes great responsibility.
The ONLY reason they did make any changes, (ie - increasing wages) was because they were coming under scrutiny, so it was their attempt at hushing up the critics.
Didn't work so well.

Did you watch the special?

Yeah.... you can tell he hasn't been anywhere....

You have no idea my dear American (wearing a Canadian patch on his arm when he travels) buddy.

Btw, no comments on the special? Surprised, you were so proud to be post about it and when/if you saw it, one would realize it was more of an "image" concern and not a TRUE concern for the people working for FoxConn.

They BARELY grazed over the reasons as to why people who worked there killed themselves.

Not really:

Let's be realistic, try applying Western-like working conditions in a communist country like China. Countries like China are so corrupt -- it's an uphill battle.

We expected to find some real horror stories, and didn’t. That said, what is acceptable on a Chinese assembly line is soul-crushing by American standards,” said Weir (ABC Nightline anchor Bill Weir).
Apple makes a big story, since they are the biggest target. It's not as if Foxconn doesn't produce other well known brands & products like Kindle, PlayStation 3, Dell, HP, Wii, Xbox 360, etc. etc.

Next up he should go to garment factories, shoe and toy factories and then finally to the countryside to see what these people are desperate to escape.

Watched it this evening, it was balanced but mostly it reminded me how really bad broadcast news is... so shallow and meaningless... like a people magazine article, single dump length and depth.

I'd really suggest you get the above documentary - you can get it from netflix.

If you've ever spent any time where most people in the world live (Asia, India, Africa, Latin America) you'll recognize those living and working conditions. I thought the comment about Apple having it's Nike moment was spot on, they're picked on because they're the highest profile, it drives a good discussion, unfortunately most people are too ignorant or inexperienced to participate in the discussion.
