This year Hockey Day will be hosted by Ron McLean and Don Cherry from Summerside, PEI.
Celebrating the game of hockey from Canada's smallest province beginning at noon ET.

Ron McLean will be at EastLink Arena in Summerside.
A CIS game will take place beginning at 2:00, ST.Thomas vs UPEI.

First NHL games set to begin at 2:00.
Winnipeg at Pittsburgh
Edmonton at Ottawa

After which it will be back to the Hockey Day show until 6:30 when Hockey Tonight takes over.

At 4:00 a CHL game from the QMJHL, Saint John vs PEI Rockets

Montreal visits Toronto in the main event at 7:00 from the Air Canada Centre in downtown Toronto.

Followed at 10:00 by Vancouver at Calgary.

At the end of the day Brent Sutter will be on After Hours.

In addition to various host sites within PEI, there will be broadcasts from places across the country.

Will you be watching ?

All day ? Only when a game is on ? Checking in from time to time ? Not at all ?

Huh?

So the other NHL games that day aren't "main" events?

What makes this game the main event?

7pm start time or the fact the Leafs are in it?
I could go on with some fluff and BS for awhile ... nah.

I will just skip to the truth ... as I see.

It is both.

This is a CBC creation, obviously, both the weekly HNIC and Hockey Day, and CBC would want the largest TV market in Canada in the prime time slot. Toronto is that market. The 7:00 time slot gets the most viewers almost every week, even when the Leafs are playing in the late game.
I am sure the CBC would rather see a better Leaf team every season because if the Leafs were better it would likely create even better numbers for the CBC.
I am sure back in the day CBC's wet dream was when Ottawa, in it's early days then, would become a good team and hopefully the Leafs would be very good, as well as both Montreal and Quebec, and Edmonton and Calgary.
The CBC must have been dreaming of late afternoon game of Montreal vs Quebec(the Battle of Quebec), followed by Toronto vs Ottawa(the Battle of Ontario) in primetime, then the late game of Calgary vs Edmonton(the Battle of Alberta).

Hockey Day would double as Rivalry Day.

The truth is that like most Leaf fans you have an overinflated sense of entitlement when it comes to the Leafs. Like the rest of the Kool-Aid drinkers you swallow Leaf nonsense wholeheartedly without really any thought. So with that mentality EVERY Leaf game is a main event whether they are in first or last place.

Well ... there is that.

Excuse me, I must make some more Leaf Kool-Aid ... and where did I put my Leaf shades ?

Sooo ... the CBC ???? Does not care whether the Leafs play in the 7:00 time slot, or would prefer another team in that slot ? They would get better numbers with another team ?

No you are right.
Montreal vs Toronto gets the best numbers without a doubt.
The CBC sucks the cock of the biggest draw and that would be the two biggest markets to be sure.

Sometimes it's hard to accept reality.

Should they show the Oilers vs. the PissKats instead, when the largest number of viewers will be available? At least the Oilers have future potential. PissKats? Not so much.

As opposed to the major US networks with MLB. They cry big time when small town teams or teams from the same region fight for the title.

I thought Calgary vs Vancouver would be bigger Canada-wide
But I forget about all the insane Leaf fans across the country

It's hard to beat the numbers (nothing to do with insanity) that Toronto and Montreal bring to the table and it's also the most historical rivalry.

Even Leaf (and Leaf fan) haters should understand that, even if they don't like it.
