Natalie Schafer took the job to play the role of Mrs. Howell after reading the script and decided that the series would go under before the end of the first season. She reasoned that even if the series was cancelled, she would be on a paid vacation in Hawaii ( where Gilligans's island was filmed ) and there was a guarantee of being paid for at least one season ( 13 episodes )
