Can you still use the old ones? Do you need to put in an additional ten cents?
I didn't find any information on the ttc website.
Thanks.

The current tokens work, and you don't have to add an additional 10 cents. The fare increase goes into effect Jan. 1st, and the current tokens will work after the fare hike.

edit - By old tokens I am guessing you mean tokens purchased within the last 2 years. The older style token (all silver without the bronze on them) will not work

Yeah, I bought a bunch soon after I heard about the potential price hike. I was going to buy more but someone told me that they were going to change the token and ask to put an addition 10 cents if using the "old" tokens. I guess I should have bought more.

The old silver tokens can probably be exchanged for new ones at TTC HQ. They were doing that for awhile, call them to see if they still are.

It would cost them WAY more than 10 cents to change over to some new style of tokens. WAY more. Not only would they have to design and manufacture new ones, they would have to go retrofit all the token gates in all the stations.

Much cheaper for them to let you horde a few tokens. All they do is stop selling rolls of 50 so you can only buy 5 or 10 at a time, to limit how much you can horde.

Everyone scrambling for another 10 cents instead of the even dollar is gonna plug up the turnstiles and make the collectors work for their money

No. The old tokens (solid silver ones) are not accepted anywhere, anyhow as of quite some time ago.

They are now "collector items" I suppose.

You cannot exchange them.

stupid TTC and their system . Canada is the only first world country that uses a third world transit system .. there's not a day that goes by without the subway being down. the token is a joke....if the subway can travel any slower they should go into the Guinness World Record. the extra time wasted traveling each day causes people to go to work late, affecting employee performance and hence business growth. The staggering number of subway delays is burden to the economy and a law should be pass for unacceptable number of delays each day and the TTC should be fined.

Try using 60 nickels instead of 62, if they count them and you get caught just shrug and toss two more in.

The TTC may not be the best system in the world but it is far from the worse in the (how did you put it ?) 'first world'.

You beat me to it.

No such thing as a "first world" country.

To paraphrase....

There is a subway under my condo so it's very convenient for me and I use it alot. However I never use the ttc when I absolutely have to be on time and cannot be late. It's not reliable enough for that, but for ordinary getting around it's not bad so long as you can go by subway or major streetcar line.

I take it to work often and sometimes that means I arrive 10 our 20min late due to some problem, but most days that's not a big deal. On days when it would be a big deal I drive or take a cab.

I am bothered by the number of coughing and sneezing people there. The other stupid thing about it is that the cellphones and internet don't work.

Plus, people engaging in wambo minki on the platform. Very disturbing. Don't they know that seeing something like that could ruin a kid's life? Why can't they get a room or wait until they get home? BTW: The current tokens are quite a bit heavier than the ones they replaced.

The lack of internet is really lame. It would not have been too hard for them to put WIFI in the new subways that they just ordered. Cellular service is harder (so many carriers) but WIFI would have been easily doable and would have made a HUGE difference. I think a lot of people would even be willing to pay an extra $30/month or so to have access to subway WIFI. A company like Boingo would probably even underwrite most of the costs of doing it, because it would net them a huge number of new subscribers, or else partner up with that failed "one zone" wifi service and resuscitate it.

I have heard that cell connection is being disabled to stop terrorists from using it to blow shit up in the subway system. Not sure if I should believe it.

I'd go with "not" as there are points along the line where you get cell signal, including several pretty busy stations, like Davisville. There's also cell signal over the Bloor viaduct, which is probably where you'd want to blow up a train if you wanted to do maximum damage. If it was a security measure they would have blocked out the signal in those areas. I think they just can't get their asses in gear and figure out how to strike a deal.
