I've been thinkin I should have something handy just in case. The stipulation being that the weapon must be legal and not be a gun. A gun is off the list because you can't legally keep it loaded under your bed, and if you could it would be an accident waiting to happen. Something that would atleast stop an intruder from coming close to you. The best I can come up with is an axe or sword, somebody here must have a better idea?

A mean sonofabitch dog. A rotweiller or doberman?

Of course, it won't fit under the bed, but it'll get the job done.

An intruder is more interested in robbing your home, not attacking you.

Attach your TV, computer and components with a cable, lock up other valuables and record serial numbers.

M14 rifle with a bayonet. Remove the bolt so that it cannot be fired and therefore is legally stored. The criminal won't know. It will just scare the shit out of them, and if they don't flee at the sight of a guy with an M14 then you can actually run them through with the bayonet.

It is illegal to point a firearm at someone without lawful excuse, so the guy had better be giving you a lawful excuse before you point the bayonet in his direction.

But I think it would be pretty effective.

u have a license for it son?
Yes. An M1A semi-automatic version of an M14, or one of the Norinco semi-auto Chinese M14 knockoffs, is a non-restricted weapon. If you have your PAL you can keep it under your bed provided it is unloaded and either trigger locked or has the bolt removed so that it is inoperable.

Bayonets are legal in Canada. With the bolt removed it is just a glorified spear, but the thief doesn't know that, and a glorified spear is still a pretty effective weapon.

The very best thing is a dog that will bark. An attack type dog such as a Doberman or a Rottweiler is not necessary a retriever or a setter will do just as well if it barks when strangers drive up or knock. Almost all burglars are looking for an easy mark and they'd just as soon avoid a house with a barking dog.

As to a weapon you have to be trained and willing to use it - a weapon that you don't really know how to defend yourself with or are unwilling to actually use is worse than useless.

I know you said no firearms - but a shotgun (particularly a pump action) is probably the best (and psychologically effective as well) home protection weapon.
