Even if it was legal, I wouldn't do it. I'm afraid that I might do something stupid while I was half asleep.
There is a tale of a woman who kept a loaded gun next to the bed—just in case—but she didn't survive mistaking it for her asthma inhaler.

There's a reason we pay professional police and soldiers to do the protection and defence thing.

Hornet or wasp blaster available at all hardware stores. Good for nailing someone from 10 ft away and works better than mace or pepper spray.

I keep my guns unloaded and I don't keep any ammunition in my home. I prefer not to have any at all--I just buy what I need and use it up, mostly. If I do wind up with anything left over I keep it in a lock box in the storage locker in the car park of my building.

I throw parties now and then, and the guns always become a topic of conversation, since they are hanging on the wall. Now I don't think even roaring drunk that I would ever do anything stupid with a gun, but I don't ever want to find out the hard way that I'm wrong, or worry that some chucklehead will find the keys to the trigger locks, or whatever, so I'm much more comfortable simply not having any ammunition here.
