Not his best work.
It had a great all-star supporting cast that really made that movie work. And I saw plenty of the military mentality/thinking in that movie in the Army and at Ft Ding-a-Ling in New Jersey....

I thought The Unforgiven was a great one. Didn't hurt that he had Morgan Freeman and Gene Hackman as co-stars.

Pale Rider came close.

Heartbreak Ridge was kinda cute because his Gunny character tries to get in touch with his feminine side, just to make the GF happy. More like he's making fun of himself and his classic standard role, at the same time acknowledging that he's starting to age. On top of all that, he makes the world safe again by invading Grenada and whooping some commie ass. What a hero!

Josie Wells was such a cool flick. I really liked that one, too.

"You're a cowardly son of a bitch! You just shot an unarmed man!"

"Well, he should have armed himself... if he's going to decorate his saloon with the body of my friend."

Best lines ever in a western.

"You see there are two kinds of people in this world my friend. Those with loaded guns, and those who dig. You, dig."

I thought "GRAN TORINO" was excellent and appreciated the lack of POLITICAL CORRECTNESS and refreshing honesty. I have always liked "THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY" as a cult classic. There are many Clint movies worthy of distinction. The list goes on.......
Watch it again. Notice he uses just about every racial slur in the book except for nigger. For that political correctness he still remains Unforgiven in my books. Don't get wrong there was good in the movie but also the bad and the ugly. Took away from a true Magnum Force of the movie.

Would you like the dialogue to be sanitized? The whole point of the movie was he played a flawed character, harboring deeply rooted racial suspicion and hostility, and his character arc involved him starting to see beyond his cynicism and prejudice. That catharsis is the heart of the movie.

I love the music of a fist full of dollars, especially at the final scene with the trumpets. Ennio Morricone's music has been the backbone of may of these westerns.

Kelly's Heroes
Pale Rider
Bridges of Madison County
Unforgiven

All great movies. I can't choose one over the other.

The Sergio Leone westerns don't do much for me. They were quite unique in their day though.

Definitely my favourite actor of all time!

I really, really love Westerns (it's my mom's fault) and I've seen most of his movies and own about a dozen of them on DVD... Since the question is "Best Clint Eastwood movie ever," my answer is definitely The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, but that's also because of the great supporting performances by Lee Van Cleef, and in particular, Eli Wallach:

I think Clint himself was better in Unforgiven, and I'm not taking anything away from Gene Hackman/Morgan Freeman/Richard Harris, but The Good... is still a better movie in my eyes. Both masterpieces, but if I had to watch one or the other, that would be my choice.

Also, even though it's not his best work, I really enjoyed Space Cowboys too. :p

I liked the one with the orangutan best, probably The Good, The Bad and The Ugly next.

He wasn't in Bridges Of Madison County, that was Redford.
He directed BOMC... his best work as director was Bird. Acting, I like Unforgiven and Good, Bad & the Ugly.

Sutherland, Rickles, and Savalis (in that order) made that movie.
Sutherland and Savalis had just finished The Dirty Dozen and were up and coming stars. Rickles was well known at that time as a comedian. By far, Sutherland was the worse actor in Kellys Heros, he was trying too hard to portray a different character than his role as Pinkly in the Dirty Dozen. Sutherland got two breaks in the Dirty Dozen. He was originally an unknown extra there just to fill out the dozen guys.
Clint Walker (Posey) did not want to do the fake general scene and Sutherland was chosen to do it in his place. Frank Sinatra convinced Trini Lopez (Jiminez) that it was a bad idea to spend so much time away from his public and he left the movie. That is why in the parachute jump scene Jimenez broke his neck. Sutherland was not even suppose to be in the last scene.

FYI - You can see the full movies Kellys Heros and The Dirty Dozen on Youtube.

The movie that displayed an entirely different character! The bridges of Madison County. With all of his tough guy roles, this, for me, was a risky venture; it didn't hurt that Meryl Streep was the leading lady.
Technically speaking, you may be right about this choice, but I recently bought a Dirty Harry anniversary DVD.
