Was just sitting down after eating dinner the other night when there was a knock on my door. Foolish me i answered it, and lo and behold it was a salesman. They wanted me to sign up for a program that would help me reduce the greenhouse gas emissions in my apartment.

And all these fine people wanted was 25 bucks a month for a year. And this is what i got for my money.

2 recyclable canvas bags
1 roll of duct tape
1 sheet of plastic, to cover my windows
8 energy efficient light bulbs
1 booklet to teach me to how to use my new items

im thinking WTF 300 dollars a year for this.

The sad part is , they said i could save money, on my heating, and electricity bills. My rent is all inclusive so that selling point didnt really help any.

I declined, and shut the door.

The funny part is our landlord let them in the building, because they knew his name and apartment number, and they were using him as a reference sort of.

After they left i went online and checked the company out, first thing i came across was Ontario government warns against signing any contract with this company.

Any time I get these idiots at my door I ask them if they have an appointment. The confused look on their faces is priceless. When they say no,I tell them if I was interested in what they are selling I would have called them, not the other way around. Then just close the door in their face.

What company? Do you have a link to the government site with the warning?

Yeah, I get them too from time to time. They first want to see my hydro bill "to see if you are paying too much for..." That's about the end of it because I close my door before he/she can finish their sentence.

But, like others, sometimes they catch me by surprise if I'm having a beer in my garage with some friends. They may start their pitch and my response is two words, repeated until he/she leaves.
"Good afternoon to you sir."
"Not interested."
"But sir, you may be..
"Not interested."
"What if I could show you a way to reduce..."
"Not interested."

It usually ends by that point.

I don't even answer the door anymore.

95% of the time it's not someone I want to talk to.

It's been several years since I last consulted them, but the toronto police advice regarding home security is that you do answer your door, as a common B&E practice is to try knocking on your door first, and if there is no answer then to assume that the place is vacant & ripe for robbery.

I almost always answer the door, a polite and firm "Not interested" ala capncrunch's post above is sufficient to deal with sales peolpe and religious loonies.
