wonder how many women are getting raped, considering there was a gang rape club uncovered at a Waseda University, a top 10 university in japan a few years back...

if you ever view japanese porn, that is a feature of their society. not a good one. but this thread is about looting.

Don't recall looting and murders are happening right now after the earthquake. The locals usually blame the Mainland Mandarin Speaking Chinese illegals for all the criminal activities during the peacetime.

Even the Yakuza blame the same group when the latter organized crimes encroach their turfs.

Speaking of Yakuza, not going to be shocked the Yakuza are going to administer and organize aid to the victims faster and more efficient like in Kobe 1995 before the governments and the bureaucrats pick up the speed.
Happy days are back again for the Yakuza once the bureaucrats "took over" their work to administer and organize aid to the victims.

Before we start comparing cultures to determine why Japan has done much better compared to Haiti there is something that needs to be pointed out.

Haiti hasn't had that many earthquakes over the years compared to Japan, who averages around 1500 , per YEAR.

I think it only natural for people living in Japan to be better prepared.
Government regulation on building codes has a lot to do with this discrepancy. Japan is a Republican's (I'm a Canadian living & working in US) nightmare--heavy regulation. Haiti is the republican goal--government out of our lives. Perhaps sometimes a good thing, but the market is not always the best solution.

Last time I was in Japan, some smaller cities/towns in Gunma prefecture, I would walk into open stores and not see any owners/employees inside. It would be a thief's dream. They would be around, maybe the store next door or across the street, but it was obvious they felt no need to guard their merchandise.

Switzerland too. I remember walking into a convenience store in a small Swiss town. The owner had left a sign saying he was out for a few hours. He'd left a jar on the counter with a sign saying to put your payment for your items in there. Not only were the goods in the store unattended, but the jar full of the money other people had dutifully left was sitting on the counter. I put the appropriate amount of money in the jar and left with my goods. Looks like that's what everybody else was doing too.
