Do you even have a clue as to what you are talking about?? Who was going to bankrupt the country?? Jack Layton? Michael Ignatieff? Why? What happened in Ontario when Bob Rae was in power had absolutely nothing to do with how Jack Layton would have governed. Are you familiar with Manitoba or Saskatchewan? Both are Canadian provinces by the way and, wait for it, both have done/ did very well with an NDP government.
Jack Laytons father, Bob Layton, was a Conservative MP in the Mulroney government - do you really think Layton would have bankrupted Canada? I think you've been spending too much time drinking that Reform/Alliance Party kool aid.
I don't want my government telling me what I can do in my bedroom.
Jack Layton would be the worse thing to ever happen to Canada and yes it would bankrupt Canada, Carbon Tax, higher taxes on corporations thus killing the recovery and killing job creation. He is a socialist and that is reflected in his poorly costed and unrealistic platfrom. If the Conservative win was a minority with the NDP in a position to assume power in a coalition I will tell you the markets today would have been in the tank as this would not have been seen positively at all by anyone outside our boarder.
The fact that he is opposition leader has NOTHING to do with his policies or platform. He benefited from a major protest vote in Quebec and nothing more. Ironicially Quebecers voted for many MP's some of whom I understand from media reports don't even speak french very well??? (Someone explain that one to me.) He's got some very qualified people from Quebec though, a waitress who was in Vegas during part the election, a brick layer, baker etc. Do Quebecers even know who exactly what their NDP MP's standfor other then being a name on a ballot that was blindly checked off. Jack Layton is a very likeable and pesonable person and it was is persona not his policies that appealed to the soft nationalist vote that traditionally went to the BQ. They will try the NDP on for size until the next election but it will be very interesting to see how the NDP manages their new role and it won't be easy. The good news though at least Quebecers voted (though probably not wholeheartedly) for a federalist party and the BQ is no longer a major factor in the province.
Quebec is an idealistic society and essentially wants money and more transfer payments from Ottawa and the rest Canada hence the NDP are socialists promising the world and would spend, spend, spend.
Jack Layton can ulitmately thank Ignatieff for his victory as the Liberals were the architects of their own demise as they were the one that forced an unwanted election and ultimately paid the price for their arrogance.
The good news out of this we will have a stable federal government in place representing ALL regions of Canada and we won't constantly be faced with pending election everytime there is a significant vote in parliment.
