Layton's surge just shows the importance of the debates in some cases. It is the reason why all parties receiving funding, including the Green Party, need to be represented.

Also, I see the Rhinoceros Party is back in business. Although possibly entertaining, I am not sure a debate with all 18 parties would do much to inform voters.

Here's something that might keep somebody up at night. A coalition between the Liberal and only the NDP, without the dreaded BQ. Check the polls and do the math. Only IPSOS shows figures that don't support that possibility. Harper couldn't do it with the boogie man BQ support.

I cannot see why the liberals would ever agree to a formal coalition lead by the NDP. As bad as the liberals are currently doing, their goal should be to someday form a governing party. In the long run, I think they would be far better off as an opposition party than the junior party in a coalition. As an opposition party, they can try to be a creditable “government in waiting”. As the junior party in a coalition, I think people would stop thinking of them as a government in waiting.
I think the only realistic coalition would be a liberal lead one. Otherwise, I predict a conservative government.

Ya, he's really sticking his neck out on this one, but I suspect a anyone but Harper movement. It worked in N&L. Harper's had 5 years to show us his tuff and it's time for a closet bible thumper to move aside.
Perhaps you will see a new party - "Liberal Democrats"
Unite the left, Harper would be dead. (Although small L liberals like me would hate to see the liberals dragged to the left)
It's an easier job to stand on the top of the hill, keep mum, and let others make the mistakes.
Perhaps you're rationalizing, political candidates / parties tend to win because of the strength of their message or the weakness of the others.....

However, such a merger presents a problem that the Alliance and Progressive conservatives did not have. Namely, the unions get a lot of automatic delegates at NDP conventions that would effectively have to agree to the merger. I cannot see the liberals agreeing to automatic union delegates in a combined party. I can also not see the unions being willing to give up their automatic delegates.
If they do win 100 seats I don't see how you can rule it out. Harper will be up to his usual BS and will probably lose confidence within 2 sessions of Parliament. The new GG is not from Haiti so he understands democracy so will probably deny Harpo's bi-annual proroguing
