Just to be clear I hate the Leafs. If Tehran got an NHL team I would cheer for them over the Leafs in the Cup final. Clear enough tone?
Know we know we can ignore any comment you have re: the Leafs, since it will be totally prejudiced.

Funny I could say the same thing about you as it seems you can't critically analyze the moves Burke makes besides "He's a GM and knows more than me so he must be right"

Actually I am able to give credit where it is due. I work with some fanatical Leafs fans and at the time I told them I hated the Phaneuf trade since the Leafs were getting the best player in that trade without giving up much. Burke took advantage of the situation in the Flames "room" since there seemed to be a schism with Dion and Regehr and Flames management sided with Regehr.

Again it doesn't take many observation skills to see that most teams that build winning franchises do it through the draft and they value their draft picks. If you are a team that is close to winning or at least contending for a Cup it might be worth it to give up picks as they will be low 1st rd. picks and the chance at a championship is worth the price you have to pay. This is not exactly a revolutionary philosphy. It just seems that Burke has not followed it despite all the "we develop players not trade players" bluster he spouted shortly after arriving in Toronto then trashing the value of 1st rd. picks after making the Kessel trade and then getting rid of players to reacquire some 1st rd picks to lessen the effect and criticism of the Kessel trade.

BTW it's a lot harder to go from good to great than bad to good

Lost in a daydream of beautiful women.
Sorry...late to the party on this thread....

Tom Kurvers for a first round pick (Scott Neidermeyer) maybe worse than the Kessel trade.
HAHA!! I would agree that this should actually go down as on of the worst trades in professional sports.

2canchew has the perfect hindsight 20/20 vision. btw- Kessel is not paid to be a 30 goal scorer... he's paid to get 40+ goals per season!
Kessel is actually paid to be a 30-35 goal scorer. He is only getting $5.4M (avg) per season, while perennial 40-50 goal guys make an average or $7M per season...BIG difference.

Who is he being compared to?
well Kessel is a $5.4M cap hit each year, other 30 goal scorers include Kulemin at less than half-that (and still pretty high), Drew Stafford at $1.9M, and among others, Martin St. Louis at $5.25M.

so, he's paid more than St. Louis, the former 50 goal scorer but, not expected to score more than 35? I think Burke is too generous with his signings... the trade with Boston was only part of the problem.

this is all a moot point though. he's a good 1 way player that some teams are lost without. As long as the centreman coming in is a strong 2 way forward like Ryan Kessler or Ryan Getzlaf, things can work out.

And why exactly would Anaheim or Vancouver trade those players ?

Kessler has a full no-trade clause in his contract (effective after the 2011-12 season), and Getzlaf is part of the solution in Duck land, not part of the problem.

Both are reasonably priced (well, in NHL terms anyway) Getzlaf at a cap hit of $5.325M for each of the next 2 seasons, and Kessler at $5M for each of the next 5 seasons.

Anaheim is not in any sort of cap jam, nor are the Canucks. I don't see any impetus for either club to look to rid themselves of a top six (3) forward, just to help the Maple Leafs.

Good point. Almost all teams go from bad to good. Few go from good to great.
I believe the Islanders have been mired in mediocrity for quite some time. They have occasionally shown flashes of inspiration, only to sink back again. I think they go from bad to not so bad, then back to bad again.

Having missed the playoffs the past 5 attempts, one would only hope the Leafs have finally seen the light and are moving upwards to being good. Being great is too much to ask for just yet.

For those that are saying Boston is losing the trade because Seguin is doing worse then Kessel....

You do realize that they basically traded the items that the Leafs gave with Seguin (Mid - First and Third), for Nathan Horton, who is as valuable a player as Kessel is right now. Also gives you an idea of market value.

So if you want to evaluate from Boston side its Kessel for Horton+Seguin.

Not the massive fleecing that was one characterized but still too much value was given up by Burke. Yes, Burke got a guaranteed asset for something that may potentially not. But draft picks have a market value when moves are initially made, and he gave up way too much value for that guaranteed asset.

No one has ever answered my question - a team trades two nearly equal players at the deadline -- one for a third round pick who flops and the other for a fourth round pick who becomes a good NHL player. What was the better trade at the time of the deadline?

So today at the NHL draft....Boston was actively shopping Tyler Seguin.

Looks like the shine is off the lad!

Leafs finally did well in the Entry Draft! 7th best prospect according to NHL.com

Solid two-way player on the wing. Projected to make the team in a couple of years... hopefully they don't trade him!
Ranked 8th. Leafs pick at 21. The cynic might ask why so many other teams passed on him.

I was listening to Hockey Central at Noon a while back when they were interviewing Seguin. All the time he is referring to his coach (Claude Julien) as Jules. Perhaps the coach his a nickname amongst his peers, but as a youngster, try and show some respect and use his real name. I see where the GM has basically told the kid to grow up.
