OK, he is accused of going on vacation there and slashing his wife's throat and leaving her for dead by the side of the road...then, thinking she was dead and couldn't ID him as her attacker, going to police station and claiming some black Jamaican guy did it.

Does he honestly think the other inmates there in the jail are going to like him?

The lawyer for an Ajax teacher accused of slashing his wife’s throat and leaving her for dead during their Jamaican vacation said his client is being mistreated by other inmates as he awaits trial.

A magistrate will be inspecting the local police station’s holding cells on Tuesday after Paul Martin’s lawyer complained about the conditions.

“I have concerns about how the other prisoners are treating him,” said Ernest Smith, declining to elaborate on his concerns about the jail where Martin has been held since the Dec. 23 incident.

Martin was denied bail at a preliminary hearing Friday, where reports say he sat passively as witnesses described finding his wife on an isolated coastal road, blood gushing from her throat.

In mid-December, the 43-year-old elementary school teacher vacationed to a Montego Bay resort with his wife, Cathy-Lee Martin.

Martin believed his wife was having an affair and used the trip to stabilize their six-year marriage, his lawyer said.

But instead of driving to the airport after they checked out the hotel, Martin drove their rental car in the opposite direction, the wife testified in December.

He said he wanted to take photographs of a cliff. However, after turning onto a secluded road, he allegedly slit her throat twice with a knife and choked her, she told the court, a thick bandage still wrapped around her neck.

When she asked why he attacked her, Martin accused his wife of having an affair — a claim she denies. She said he jumped out of the car and was rescued by a passing motorist.

Martin told police a carjacker had stabbed his wife.

Anyone that lives in US, Canada, Europe, Australia that finds themselves in a third world jail or prison will be used as a cash machine. The prisoners will terrorize whitey till he comes up with some protection money. Not only will the guards not care, they may be in on the extortions.

Doing something as stupid as blaming it on the ''black guy'' is as becoming as lame as blaming it on the tall dark hairy stranger. But he was in Jamaica at the time, so the tables may be turned.

No death penalty thou, its wrong to kill expect in self defense, IMO. The world be a better place if everybody could get that through their heads. Nobody should have a right to take another persons life.

Why I think the death penalty encourages people to murder. People think certain people should be killed because of what they had done in the past, so in some twisted minds, some people think their spouse should die cause how they treated them.

Only thing I agree with the pope on.

Committing any kind of crime in the third world is risky, I would not like to be in a Canadian prison, but a Jamaican prison has to be a hundred times worse.

It always surprises me why Canadians abroad feel that the Government of Canada should do everything in its power to rescue them from foreign misadventures. Here are some examples.
1) Omar Kadr
2) The double murderer in Montana.
3) The 50 million "Canadians" in Lebanon.
4) At least two Canadians in Mexico.
5) Two Canadians in Saudi Arabia.

I don't agree with you in all those cases. Khadr was a minor, and there are some VERY good reasons for Canada to encourage people to go overseas.. trade is a big part of our economy. How much of the stuff you consume comes from overseas? The richest and most powerful nations in history have almost ALWAYS been trading nations. So yes I think Canadians who need legitimate help when they get into trouble overseas SHOULD get help...morons that try to murder their wife should rot in flea infested jails while they are butt banged to the tune of bob marley.... No Woman No Cry would be appropriate lol....

Totally agree. On the other hand, there are Canadians who purposely put themselves in harm's way overseas or commit crimes overseas.

True, but the Lebenese Canadians should have been saved... BUT they should also have received a bill for the service. People that use our passport as a convenience contribute a great deal to our economy with their foreign ties and business connection... not all, but many do. The Canadian passport is great, but Harpo is devaluing it greatly with his sheer incompetence in foreign affairs.

I wonder about "dual" Canadians. How come they always ask Canada for help but never ask their other half? I look on citizenship the same as pregnancy. You can't be half pregnant. You are either Canadian or not.

Often their other half can't even provide clean water for everyone at home. People have many different views of citizenship. It depends on if you value collective or individual rights more. To me I value individual rights and I feel pretty confident that I can make a valuable contribution to any country I live in, so it is up to me to seek the best citizenship/residence option that suits me. I think individual rights are preeminent. As I said people with dual citizenships can bring a great deal of benefit to Canada. I do not have dual citizenship, but I would love to have and EU passport in addition to my Canadian passport.

It is a huge problem when an Iranian-Canadian goes to Iran. The Iranian government will treat that individual as an Iranian citizen on Iranian soil and subject to Iranian justice. (If homo, hung by neck until dead.)

I think it is also good that Canadians travel abroad and come back with a greater appreciation of Canadian values and laws. Unless Rebecca Rutland is brain dead, I'm sure that she appreciates Canada much more now that she have seen life in Mexico. Of course, Russians who fled Russia for a better life in Canada will still cheer for Russia when the Ruskies play Canada in hockey.
