Is the Kessel trade the greatest fleecing in NHL history?

As of today, does Burke trade Seguin and his 2011 pick for Kessel? Yes or No?
How would I know if Burke does that trade or not?
Maybe he would, maybe he would not.
He now knows the 2011 pick is probably going to higher than he anticipated when he did the original deal, so I suspect not, however again that is just speculation

Too many damn prior posts to read them all. Kessel and Oveckin are the same age. Guess who has more goals so far this year? Oveckin has never been the same since Canada destroyed his morale in the Winter Olympics.

Really Oveckin has as many assists as Kessel has points ... Kessel -15 Ovechkin +10 ... One is pacing himself for the playoffs cause he realizes playoffs is when it counts and Kessel is pacing himself for golf season ..

Oh by the way .. Kessel is going to allstar game but the conspiracist in me says Burke called some friends in NHL offices and got him the gig ...
I wonder if Bruins GM will get Burke back and sign Schen to a offer sheet ??? Or offer Schenn a stupid contract and for Leafs to match ???
You should stop posting immediately because you're embarrassing yourself.

1.) The league appoints players to the all star team, after the fan selections have been made. They try and have at least one representative from every team so that they can properly market their product. Do you not think that sending ONE player from the largest market in the league would make sense?

2.) The Bruins GM (Peter Chiarelli) would have no reason to offer Schenn a contract just to upstage Burke. Burke did not "steal" Kessel away buy presenting him an offer sheet. He TRADED for him (hence the subject of this thread) and paid a more than fair price which has already benefited the Bruins. If Chiarelli did drink some of the kool aid that you are serving, he would be screwing himself into an already tight cap issue and be forced to give up draft picks for the signing. This would be directly matched to the contract size. So lets say that he signed him to 4 years at $22M, he would have to give up AT LEAST one 1st, 2nd and 3rd round pick...not ONE OF them...one of EACH. Schenn is not worth that much at this point of his career...nor is he worth 4 years at $22M. I would say that he will likely sign a 2-3 year (to complete evaluating his progression) at 2.5-3M per year.

Getting Tom Kurvers for Scott Niedermayer was possiby the worse trade ever made in Leafs history. I believe Gerry McNamara made that one.

How could he? Boston has no more money left to spend after signing Savard, Chara & Bergeron to huge contracts. They even had to give up Marco Sturm for nothing in order to make cap room. Along with Lou Lamoriello, Peter Chiarelli is one of the worse GMs when it comes to handling the cap.

Each team in the NHL sends a player to the All Star game. In the case of the Leafs it would likely be between Kessel and Grabovski. Kind of a "pick em" proposition. Hardly an embarrassment (and most callers to sports radio are knee jerk idiots)

Burke and Schenn's agent might have a set figure ( lets use your figure 2.5-3M per year ) in mind and if Chiarelli puts a offer sheet for 4.5 million dollars then Leafs would be forced to match and pay him more then they wanted ...
Schenn will be an easy signing by Burke. He's just a restricted free agent. His current cap hit is $2.975 million. It won't cost the Leafs that much more to re-sign him for those reasons alone. The Leafs will also have a lot of money to sign people once the season ends, considering Kaberle & Giguere will be gone. Kaberle has a $4.25 salary, while Giguere's cap it is $6 million. They likely won't need to replace Kaberle. Already enough defencemen in the system which can play defence for next year's Leafs. Same thing with Giguere. He's not even the team's best goaltender in my opinion.

Sorry. My mistake. I thought they had to select a rep from each team (maybe the fact one of the rookies is a Sabre counts)

My personal choice to send to the all-star game would have been Tomas Kaberle. He's been the team's most consistent defenceman all season long & plays just under 25 minutes per game. He's on the power play's first unit & kills penalties. He's the team's top offensive defenceman. By having him at the all-star game, his trade value might have went up & the Leafs might have been able to trade him for something of considerable value prior to the trade deadline.

Grabovski has been good, but people have only started to notice him over the past month or so. Just a couple of months ago, everybody wanted him to get traded. Now those same people are whining because he's not going to the all-star game. Make up your mind!

Guys Guys .. I am not saying it is going to happen .. I was just throwing it out there ... The Bruins don't have to worry about the Cap cause they know the Leafs would match and if they cause the Leafs to pay one million more then they want to then they accomplished something but also if the Leafs didn't match then the Bruins could unload a player and his salary to make room for Schenn ..
For the record...I didn't suggest that you leave terb. Just that you stop posting in this particular forum because with each post you come across as more aloof.

They would not HAVE to match anything. Burke walked away from the Penner deal and he would do the same for Schenn. That would leave Boston in a situation where they would have no choice, but to sign him to an over inflated deal that they can't afford AND give up draft picks to the Leafs. He would also never be able to move Schenn at that point with a fat contract.

Again the GM's keep changing but the ownership stays the same ...
Doesn't that happen in almost every organization in every sport. The owner stays around longer than the GM's?

Shack come on that is not my point ... I am saying I follow the Raptors and Leafs and then this story came along this morning and it got me thinking .. Between the Raps , Leafs and now FC how many 1st round pics have been traded away .. Raptors traded a draft pic that turn out to be Roy Herbert then we traded a draft pic to the Heat ( Colengelo has got the draft pics back but he did give them away ) ... These 3 organizations are under the same ownership which seem to have some common activity going on ..
Don't know about TFC, but I'm pretty sure Burke and Colangelo have autonomy to run their teams as they wish. I don't think MLSE made those decisions.

You don't think that maybe MLSE doesn't give a shit about winning as long as they make money? God forbid they would think that away. Being profitable couldn't possibly be their main goal, now could it?

MLSE is mostly concerned about being profitable. It is accountable to it's shareholders and must provide a strong return.

Their main point is remaining marketable. If they are in the media and people recognize their brand, they will generate revenue. Of the "big three" that MLSE owns, the Raptors are the ones that need to tread carefully. FC and the Leafs could lose year after year after year and they would continue to sell out games, because there are enough crazed fans to keep it going. The Raptors have a large following as well, but they have to be more careful with their product. Too many years out of a playoff race and season's tickets as well as what I call "brand sales" (merchandise, Raptors TV, etc) will start to suffer.

If any of these clubs could land a Steve Stamkos or John Tavares or John Wall or Darlington Nagbe, they absolutely would because they could market the hell out of them and generate themselves millions in additional revenues.

Exactly. And although Carter is hated now and IMHO is one of the biggest flops in NBA history, he is really what got the franchise going. Before Vince they had some success promoting "Might Mouse", but Carter really put them on the map in the league and around North America. They were able to put together a decent team - even convinced Haquim the Dream to come over - and make a couple of decent runs, but were a relative flash in the pan. If they are not careful to always keep a marquee player on their roster, they could actually start to struggle in sponsorships, seasons tickets and overall attendance. Look at what happened to the Jays after the strike in '94 and they were still a good team. Fans lost interest, the Jays lost players and they have never recovered.

To get this back to hockey (we can pick up the Raptors talk in another thread)...it's different for hockey. Hockey will never die in Toronto. If Ottawa missed the playoffs for 7 straight seasons, you would see major losses on their part in attendance. Every game in Toronto is sill a sellout and there is still a tremendous line up to get tickets. The same happens in Montreal.

The reality is is that Burke is in his third year and the Leafs are still a bad team with limited upside, their young players are good and not great. He has nobody that is worth a high draft pick, unless you package Kessel with someone. The team is screwed for a long time, can win a few regular season games but never beat a good team 4 times in a playoff series.

I will respect that you wrote IMHO cause it is your opinion but a player who is 26 points away from 20,000 career points and a player who was drafted " 5th " and has averaged 23 pts per game in the playoffs are not stats associated with the word Flop ... Although coming from somebody who posted Alan Bester and star in the same sentance :) That would make VC a HOF ... Vince Carter a Gold Medal , Rookie of the Year , 8 time allstar and All-NBA Second Team (2001) All-NBA Third Team (2000) NBA Slam Dunk Champion (2000)
I don't think Vince has much respect in the league. I would say he's thought of as a modern day Dominique Wilkins or Reggie Theus. Guys who can light it up consistently but they won't pay the price especially on defense to ever lead a team to a championship. I would say he's perceived as soft.
