A typical minor's cage travels at no more than 0.5 m/s = 100 ft/min.

1,100 ft/min = 5.6 m/s is achievable with constrained mechanical systems. Usual maximum speed for most mechanical systems is somewhere between 1 and 3 m/s, as those are the speeds where a number of important mechanical effects come into play (including bearing life span, friction problems, air/wind resistance, turbulent flow, lubrication requirements, etc.).

Note sure I would want to be in anything moving that fast however. Are you sure your friend did not confuse the people elevator with a cargo transport system? or an electric vehicle?

The company that hired the workers who are still down there has declared bankrupcy. Basically, those guys are not getting paid a dime for all the time they are down there. What they need is a good lawyer to get them a book & TV deal.

The company just walked away and left those guys down there. It is the Chilean government that is doing the rescue. Hope the miners don't get a bill from the government.

I heard in a news report a while back that a few of them would not be able to make it out due to their current girth and so they were putting these individuals on special diets to ensure that they would fit through the hole.

No fucking way I would get in that cage. Just imagine if it the rock shifts as you're getting pulled up, cage gets stuck... hello claustrophobia.

How do they decide who goes first, second, third, etc. when the escape shaft is ready?
The fat fucks go last, just in case... wouldn't want one getting stuck and blocking the escape route for everybody else.

I may sound insensitive but I'm not joking it would be a real problem: I understand some of them are being asked to lose weight so that they'll fit in the narrow shaft that's being drilled.

They know know and have also been told to lay of the Buffalo wings because the escape shaft can only accommodate normal size men (no fatsos).
no one in Chile would eat sh!!y Buffalo wings.. they would rather eat the whole bbq chicken.and drink a galon of wine... empanada and chicha.. why eat wings when the rest the of the bird is so much more food .. i guess stupid is as stupid is..

so it would be better to just stay there and not get rescued... i bet you would scrap the be the first one out..

I'm not sure the book would be all thatexciting...

"One day, we got stuck in a hole underground. Then we sat there for months. Then we got hauled out though a skinny tunnel. We all had baths. The end"

On the other hand someone could make the movie pretty cheap... They could film it all in a store room with one flashlight.

Seriously though, I am somewhat clausterphobic... The thought of squishing into that elevator and being dragged out makes my skin crawl. I suppose that considering the alternative though....

I hope that they are all coping ok, poor buggers.

These guys are probably used to crawling around in small spaces, low mineshafts, etc. so I doubt the clasutrophobia going up will be a problem. Glad it's not me though. The only time I was down we were in rooms 30 and 40 feet high, and shafts that you could drive a truck through...and I was still claustrophobic.
