Mayoral candidate Rob Ford is proposing to keep marathons and runs off city streets following a weekend race that snarled downtown traffic.

Ford, who is leading in the polls, says Torontonians are frustrated with all the closures and the traffic delays they cause.

"If we have to use the roads maybe once or twice a year, people can understand it," he told CP24 Breakfast. "But I think we're using the roads one too many times and it's really frustrating for people trying to get in and out of the city."

Ford says marathons, runs and other events that shut down roads could be held in city parks, such as High Park or at Downsview Park.

"There's a lot of huge parks and bike paths," Ford says. "Let's just look at an alternative route."

He also said long runs could be held from James Gardens in Etobicoke and travel down to Lake Ontario from the Humber River.

Other candidates disagree. Joe Pantalone said Ford's idea shows he hasn't thought about what's good for the city.

"In order to run a marathon, you need… streets that are safe," Pantalone says. "He thinks all you have to do is go into a park with tiny paths and hills on the side, (there's) also trip hazards and trees. "It won't work, it can not work."

Rocco Rossi says Toronto should embrace races. He says a marathon in a park system would be logistically difficult.

"I think it's a small vision," said Rossi. "Lots of cities around the world have a signature marathon and I think Toronto should have a signature marathon."

Ford also told the Toronto Sun that motorists were miffed construction crews were not working on the Jameson Avenue bridge, where the Gardiner Expressway is down to two lanes due to construction. He told the Sun that crews should be working "24/7."

If you add up all the expenses in detours and signage, traffic control (do paid-duty officers get double-time on Sundays?) and general inconvenience, they might actually have enough money to fix up the 'tiny paths and hills on the side'...

He's a fat fucker, nobody should expect him to know anything about marathons.

He's right about the bridge, crews should be working that 24/7.

Let them run marathons in Exhibition Park, lots of space, little traffic, no inconvience.

Politicians are responsible for many issues OJ.. I've written to my local MP about trivial things, but that's ultimately who is responsible so that's who I talk to. You may feel this is not important, but even the minor things are their responsiblity.

I think it's an idea worth exploring, but needs tweaking. If we have the room in a park, then why not ? or at least have a portion of it in a park, thus limiting it's impact on traffic.

Here's a thought, why have the route even be the same every year ? if you want distintive then let's mix things up a bit.

The New York City marathon shuts down the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge for a period of time - I would imagine that is a bit of an inconvenience. The Boston marathon shuts down the centre of the city. The Chicago and London marathons also shut down major portions of their respective cities. I think Ford is taking his "everyman" bit too far on this one - if Toronto wants to be a world class city it should act like one and world class cities tend to recognize that the privilege and recognition associated with hosting world class events tends to come with a little inconvenience that has to be accomodated. As for Ford's plan, I defy anyone to show me a recreational trail or pathway large enough to accomodate the volume of runners that participate in marathons. Ford has a healthy lead, has it gone to his head and made him so arrogant he thinks he can spout off whatever nonsense enters his head without consequences? If he had actually investigated a viable alternative to running marathons on city streets (i.e., consulted with marathon leaders etc.) and not just shot his mouth off it would be different but clearly he is just shooting from the hip on this one and looks stupid doing so.

CN Tower has 2579 steps. Assuming an 8" riser, a 26 mile marathon could be done in something less than 40 times up and down - now there is a 'signature marathon' for the City of Toronto!

(26 * 5 280) / ((2 579 * 8) / 12) = 79.8449011

You're absolutely right, colt, but those are one-day events that happen once a year.

It seems that every time I turn around there's a marathon for this and a marathon for that. Once a year, sure. Six, seven times a year? Ah, no.

But IF there is a way to take the Marathon's off the Road (or at least portion's of it) and minimize the inconveniece, wouldn't that be better ?

If we want to standout from other Marathon's, we need to find a way to do it better. Wether it can or cannot I don't know, but it's worth looking into.

i cant really take any mayoral candidate who gets drunk and belligerent and has to be escorted out of the ACC very seriously. If the guy cant even control himself, how could he possibly make proper decisions for a whole city?

wonder what the voters would say if only the sidewalks were used for marathons and no pedestrians were allowed to utilize them during the many marathons we have in TO? Would the pedestrians be forced to use the bike lanes?

OMFG

I'll bet the guy who ran the ORIGINAL marathon didn't whine & pussy about tripping hazards.... How about these marathon organizers take some responsibility & walk the path to take care of that shit before & at their Own expense????

Which still leaves it in the trivial sector. But thanks foir the lecture on the trivial; nice to know we have a candidate who understands that appeals. Sad to think how many can't see beyond the trivial andit's truly scary to think the front-runner can't either. Even worse though, to imagine he can, but just panders to the LCD.
