What are the odds these guys will survive down there for four months in isolation without some sort of conflict developing? Think some of them will go nuts and turn violently on others, Lord of the Flies style?

Making it a public poll so we can see who predicted what.

I think this is a little different scenario.They have outside contact...and they're not stupid.They know they have a hero's welcome coming to them.PLUS....with the connector tube they can order anything they pretty want food wise...it's bad..but it's not horrificly bad.

Apparently they have a space that is a mile long. Third world people will deal with it better I believe, they don't live as privelidged a life as us, they grow up on the street where people are everywhere, they're more social and used to being around others.

I believe if it were people from developed countries, all hell would break loose.

They're in a safe room, that they have divided into two sections. One for living and sleeping, one for waste, but I don't think there is any real barrier between the two. They're getting fresh air and food and water, but the stench and constraint of their living conditions is likely to become extreme.

Thus far I've heard several NASA and Navy psychologists say that they are happy with how things are going. The miners seem to have a leadership hierarchy in place which they are respecting - and that this is important for their "holding it together" until they are rescued.

That's crazy. In a month the smell will be horrible. 3 months is a damn hell of a stretch. Even 1 month is long.

But not 4 months, and they are not working, which would make it easier. They are biding their time and pretty much unable to do anything. They're effectively trapped in a room until someone can get to them. That has to be the most frustrating thing of all.

Yes, but it is a huge room. I'm not sure precisely how big it is, but a mile of tunnel space as previously mentioned is close to the mark. It is not as though they have a 30 by 30 space and that is it.

Well they are not in "isolation" really. Daily contact. Video, food, messages, instructions, etc...

With the public watching there likely will not be any piggy piggy piggy.

The emergency shelter, or safe room, the 33 miners are in is 540 sq. ft. or about the size of a living room. How far they can roam outside that, taking air quality into consideration, and what good that would do them I don't know.

They are ~700 m vertically underground in a mine that has ramp access. Ramps are typically driven at 12% to 15% grades so there is at least 4.6 km of ramp. Somewhere on this ramp there was a cave in which prevents them from getting back to surface. At a guess I would have to say they've got at least 1 km of tunnel they can wander around in. They also have access to several pieces of mobile equipment which they are using the batteries from, although they would not be able to run the engines for ventilation reasons. They have at least 2 drill holes which have intersected the workings near them and they are getting food, water, ventilation and power down that now. This would not be enough air to run any engines though.

They most likely have set up a latrine well away from the lunch room/refuge station they are in, although I have heard that they may be bagging human waste now and sending it back to surface. The mine would also have had a port-a-potty somewhere near the lunch room but that is likely full now.

They have lots of room to move around but I suspect that they would like to see some sky soon.

Reminds me of the 1972 incident where a plane, carrying a Uruguayan rugby team, crashed in the Andes. They were stranded 72 days; having heard early in their ordeal, via radio, that the search for them had been called off! There was a great book written about the incident and a movie (which I did not see).
