This is an amazing story! I've been underground 4000+ ft BUT there is no way I could imagine been trapped underground for 3-4 months! And then being pulled up a small tunnel - 66cm, 23 in - from, as I understand approx. 2300 ft.
They are being passed food, water, medicine, etc through a 6 inch pipe.
33 men - trapped in a very small space.

Indeed. I hope they all survive, physically and psychologically. Then I pray they will sell the rights to their story to Hollywood and make lots of money so they don't have to go down into the mines ever again.

As of yesterday they didn't even tell the workers how long it is going to to take to rescue them. I can't imagine the shock when they hear that it might take as long as December.

They know know and have also been told to lay of the Buffalo wings because the escape shaft can only accommodate normal size men (no fatsos).

asshat - heard/saw it used so much on here and elsewhere, so I finally GOOGLEd it.

Why is it taking so long to get them out ?

Apparently they need to dig a new shaft 700M down, not an easy task. Glad they are alive and I wish them the best on the ordeal that lies ahead. Hopefully the thought of the overtime cheque keeps them going.,

Where did you get this number from? A hole 66 cm in diameter would have a circumference of 207 cm or 81.6 inches. Allowing for the cage they intend to lower down this hole it would seem that a waist of more than 35 inches should be able to be accommodated.

Even though the miners have undoubtedly lost a significant amount of weight, Chilean officials are trying to ensure they don't bulk up before their rescue. They say the miners will have to be no more than 35 inches (90 centimeters) around the waist to make it out of the tunnel.

The escape tunnel will be about 26 inches (66 centimeters) wide — the diameter of a typical bike tire — and stretch for more than 2,200 feet (688 meters) through solid rock. That's more than 80 inches (207 centimeters) in circumference, but rescuers also have to account for the space of the basket that will be used to pull the miners to safety.

Most Americans couldn't meet the 35-inch limit. The average U.S. waistline is 39.7 inches for men and 37 inches for women, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

and they are not going to get paid. the company that put them there is planning on a bankruptcy filing so there will be no money for the miners

Shoot! All that overtime inside the mine will be unpaid. The company is so broke that the Chilean government is funding the escape shaft.
