I'm losing respect for Maradona, he looks like a hick with that mullet and he's rude with the interviews . Now he got into this bullshit with Pele and Platini. I don't konw if he's just gathering publicity or he's a boor. What do you think?

PRETORIA – If it ain’t a party until someone breaks something, Diego Maradona has rushed into the South African kitchen waving his arms wildly about.

Just as long as he keeps his clothes on, eh?

The erratic Argentine skipper spent a little time during a press conference at Pretoria’s Loftus Versfeld Stadium Wednesday reflecting on the only man who ever played this game better than he did.

Recently, that player – the Brazilian, Pele – suggested Maradona took the job in charge of the Argentina squad because he needed the money. Despite the fact that he earned millions during his career through salary and endorsements, Maradona’s money (and several other sorts of) troubles are well documented.

Asked about that comment on Wednesday, Maradona brushed it off with a sideswipe that will enrage residents of Argentina’s bitterest rival.

“I’m not surprised,” he said. “Pele should go back to the museum.”

That sound you hear in the background is Brazilian outrage climbing up to DefCon One.

Then Maradona rounded on UEFA boss Michel Platini, another of the greatest-ever-to-play-the-game. Platini suggested some while ago that Maradona was a better player than a coach – which isn’t much of a stretch.

“As for Platini, I’m not surprised because I always had a distant relationship with him. We would just say, ‘Hi’ and ‘Goodbye’,” Maradona shrugged. “But we know what the French are like and Platini is French. He believes he’s better than the rest of us.”

That sound you hear in the background is the French people not giving a damn what Diego Maradona thinks.

Maradona went on to heap scorn on the Jabulani ball, Argentina’s next opponents, South Korea, and the quality of soccer generally that we’ve seen at this tournament.

With so few goals or enticing matches having been played here so far, the redoubtable Maradona is quickly becoming the most entertaining show in South Africa.

Diego Armando Maradona is, was and will always be a philistine, ghetto peasant of the highest order.

Sure, his futbol career was stellar but that is not all that makes a man. Names such as Sindelar, Garrincha, Beckenbauer, Pele, Platini and Cruyff will always be held in higher regard and outshine his star in this era or any other age pre or post Maradona.

Reaching the height of recognition that he has, signifies an ambassadorship of the sport. He has no conception of the fact that not he or anyone is bigger than the game, the ball and the pitch. His lack of education and personal integrity will forever blemish his accomplishments otherwise.

If he ever learns to conduct himself like a dignified professional and an adult it will be a case of 'too little, too late'.

He is an asshole first and a recognized futbolista second. He saw to that clearly.

Well Pele said he needed the money (nothing that bad) and I looked up Platini didn't say nothing. (He thought Platini said something)
He could have handled it diffrently. I think he's great but not as great as Pele, but there is a chance that Messi will pass him.

Look. Maradona is a Chavez disciple. That means if there's a controversy brewing he'll somehow find his way into the thick of it even if it isn't about him. I can name 10 players better than Maradona skill wise. And thousands classier and more respectful.

You haven't followed his career to closely have you? As DD said, though gifted on the field, Maradona isn't much of a person off it. Addict, horribly neglectful of his responsibilities (family and otherwise), just a generally low class guy. For the most part he gets a pass because of his incredible talent and undoubted passion for the game.

Actually I should qualify my positon. Maradona's up there skill wise but there are many better all around players than him. Here's a few:

Pele
George Best
Johan Cruyff
Michel Platini
Gerd Muller
Bobby Charlton
Ronaldo
Marco Van Basten
Ferenc Puskas
Gheorghe Hagi
Sandor Koscis
Franz Beckenbauer

Magnificent list that clearly speaks truth.

I might add, with kind permission:

Alfredo di Stefano

Matthias Sindelar.

Clearly, Maradona does not even make the top ten list.

Totally agree. He's the best Argentinian footballer of all time so Maradona isn't even the best from his own country. I just looked up Maradonas stats from his European club career - he didn't have more than 16 goals in an entire season.

Maradona is the greatest soccer player of all time, not Pele. His addiction to cocaine and alcohol hampered his reputation but reality is that it made him an extra special person because he's been there and recovered. He's managing and they're not !!

Sorry but there is no better player than Maradona. Pele is a close second but Maradona takes the cake. His achievements for club and country speak volumes, he literally singlehandly took Napoli to Serie A and European titles. Not even Messi can walk in his shadow, yet!
I believe it was a cheap shot by Pele against Maradona, so he responded in his usual manner.
Cryuff was my favourite player growing up but he was not able to take Holland to a World Cup, which somewhat tarnishes his record.
Now before you dispute this, please remember that alot of the players mentioned played on teams with other allstars.
