I recall watching the second game he ever pitched for the Jays. He was perfect through 26 batters I think, then gave up a homerun to the 27th guy.

I believe that was against the Tigers and Bobby Higginson hit the dinger.
I remember it too. It was the last game of the season and they were giving the new kid a couple of starts because the season was a lost cause. The Tigers put in their B lineup and didn't give a shit..... until about the 7th when they realized that Halladay was more than they could handle and that he was humiliating them. Then they started trying, but couldn't get a read on his pitches. LOLOL.

Yep, it was the 2nd-last game of the 1998 season. I was at that game with some friends, but Roy wasn't quite perfect; Alex Gonzalez (not the current one, the other one) booted a ground ball, and Roy got the next guy to GIDP. I think he might have walked a guy too, possibly in the same inning, but I can't remember for sure.

Either way, he kept mowing down Tigers until there were two down in the top of the ninth, and Bobby Higginson blasted a low-and-away fastball over the fence in right-centre field. :(

Of course, one of my idiot friends made the stupid mistake of saying, "Oh, he's got a no-hitter going!" sometime around the 7th or 8th inning... and to this day, we still blame him for Higginson's homer. :p

Despite pitching for so many mediocre Jays teams and in the tough American East with the DH, I think the Doc has the best winning percentage since Lefty Grove. 4-5 good years with a good team (like the Phillies?) and he is a 1st ballot HOF.

Do you just make comments because they look good ?

Doc doesn't even have the best winning percentage of active pitchers (3rd).

Overall, he has the 4th best winning percentage since Grove.

Stop being so anal. I said he is second and you say he is fourth. What's the big deal? I'm almost sure I saw stats that said he is second among pitchers who have a MEANINGFUL number of wins.
Is a minimum 1,000 innings pitched meaningful enough ?

That is the standard that baseball-almanac.com uses.

Johan Santana .670 record 122-60
Vic Raschi .667 record 132-66
Roy Oswalt .662 record 137-70
Roy Halladay .661 record 148-76

I'll presume you know about Santana and Oswalt.
Here are some quick stats on Vic Raschi : 4x All-Star selection (1948, 1949, 1950, 1952),
6x World Series champion (1947, 1949, 1950, 1951, 1952, 1953), Led AL in strikeouts in 1951 with 164 .

If it's not such a big deal, why not just write: Roy Halladay is a great pitcher.
I don't think anyone on this site would argue with you.

When you use statistics and overstate his place in baseball history, and someone corrects you, why accuse that person of being anal ?

Call me when Johan, Vic and/or Roy Oswalt have more wins than the good Doctor. I only count pitchers who have as many or more wins than Doc.

Ok, maybe I overeacted but I thought the tone of your correction was disrespectful. Next time, correct me respectfully. I just realized that Whitey Ford (236-106) also has a better winning % than Doc. Still, no shame in being behind Whitey and Lefty.

I see, statistics that are good enough for comparison purposes for baseball-almanac.com are not good enough for you.

Thanks for pointing out that Whitey Ford has an even higher win percentage than the players I noted.
That just makes my point stronger.

It is not my responsibility to monitor your perceptions, you can take things any way you want.

Halladay is older than both Oswalt & Santana. Oswalt by a full two years.
Roy is in his 13th M.L. season, Oswalt his 11th, and Johan, his 10th season.
Anyone can make any numbers mean just about anything, but the fact is both Oswalt & Santana have better winning percentages than Halladay.

If you're that uncomfortable with my tone, feel free to put me on ignore.

I have no problems with corrections (politely stated). So, we have Whitey and Lefty ahead of Doc. Not bad company. If Doc can put together another 100 wins, he should be a first ballot HOF. Anyway, peace.

100 more wins gives him 248 for his career. Hardly numbers for a first ballot inductee.

That would put him in Juan Marichal territory and as good as Roy is he's no Marichal.

Don't forget that this is the new modern era of pitchers where a pitcher starts only about 33 games a year and can lead the league in wins with 18-19 wins. The era of the 25 game winner is over. I always thought Juan "high leg kick" Marichal was overrated. He played on a team with Willie Mays and Willie will make any pitcher look great.

Almost a third perfect game in less than a month tonight.

Armando Galarraga of Detroit Tigers had a perfect game through 8 2/3 innings and was about to close out the deal with a routine infield out; but, - the umpire at first base, Jim Joyce, blows the call.

Replays show the runner was 2 feet away from first base when the ball hit the glove of the first baseman with his right foot down on the base.

I wonder if the umpire is going to apologize tomorrow for blowing it. Sometimes they do.

It really wasn't close. Even if it was close, you'd figure the umpire would give the pitcher the benefit of the doubt for the sake of doing something remarkable. Actually, it would have been historical as it would have been the first time there were 3 perfect games in a season. The last time there were even two was 1880 and this idiot, egotistical umpire totally blows it. Sort of like the umpire robbing the Jays of the only triple play in World Series history.

There have been a lot of bad calls this year.
