This should be fun.

'Point out a bigger upset' is the task.
First we must look at the original quote.

He said "Biggest upset" not biggest hockey upset, just biggest upset.

I watch a lot of sports and I am closing in on 50 years. I remember the Leafs winning in '67. Not that that is an upset, I was just saying.
I like hockey(#1), of course, followed by football, baseball, basketball, boxing, Olympics, skiing and several other sports. I even watch World Cup Soccer every four years. My friends tell me there have been some major upsets in that sport.

Now, do you want them in order of the dates in which they happened, by sport, separate pro and amateur ? Who is to judge whether the 'upsets' I post are bigger or not ?
I begrudge you might have a point. Pains me to say that to a Alfie hater.

Greatest hockey upset in my generation was team USA beating the Soviet national team in the olympics in Lake Placid I believe. A true miracle if ever I saw one.

Boxing is Douglas over Tyson. Douglas was a 40-1 underdog going in.

football was superbowl 3 with the Jets beating the Colts.

But statistically this Hab victory is right up there. On paper this series should not have even been close.

Shit, I'm agreeing with Ironhead. (3rd sign of the Apocalypse) :D

The first upset that popped into my mind when I read that drivel, was the New York Giants over the New England Patriots just a few years ago.

That would be just as big an upset, if not bigger, and it wasn't in the 1st round of the playoffs, but for a championship.
Hey wait a minute ! He asked me to do it. lol
Geek named three off my list.

I will post my list after the Sharks/Wings game tonight. Let the drama build. lol

I forgot about this.
Washington, though finishing first overall with a high powered offence, was/is not a playoff savvy team. As some one posted, Ovechkin is a great individual player, but to when in the playoffs one must sacrifice for the team. Something, it appears, he has not grasped yet.
I picked them, the Caps, to win the series partly because of their season and offence, and partly because of Montreal's goaltending issues and lack of having a true number one goalie. I guess that has been resolved ... temporarily.

Remember, the list is subject to interpretation. Some may agree, others may not.

Without further ado ...

Upsets !

"Do you believe in miracles ? YES !" US knocks off the heavily favored USSR in the '80 Olympics.

Belarus knocks off Sweden in 2002 Salt Lake. We should remember this because Canada had the easy time in defeating Belarus 7-1 en route to the Gold Medal.
Sundin said "I don't understand how we could lose against this team.".

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Minnesota Wild(#6) knocking off Colorado(#3), then Vancouver(#4) before losing to the Ducks(#7) who in turn knocked off Detroit(#2) and Dallas(#1). It was the Wild's first playoff birth and they upset the Avs.

San Jose Sharks(#8) eliminating ST.Louis Blues(#1) in 2000.

Edmonton Oilers(#8) first round upset of Detroit Red Wings(#1) in 2006. The Oil would go all the way to the finals before losing to Carolina.

========================================

The New York Giants defeating the New England Patriots after the Pats went 16-0 in the regular season, then of course add the playoff games. The Super Bowl was just supposed to be the crowning ceremony.

New York Jets beat the heavily favored Baltimore Colts in SB 3. Joe Naimth guaranteed the win.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

March Madness; NCAA basketball, Appalachian St. knocks off Michigan.

NC State winning the tourney and Coach Valvano running around like a mad man.

----------------------------------

Miracle Mets in '69.

-----------------------------------

Buster Douglas KOing Mike Tyson in '90.

On the other habs thread, I gave a very nice compliment from a Leafs fan on beating the caps. In addition, there wasn't a single leaf fan trolling in that thread. And yet, there was still leaf bashing and insults. Well, I don't feel sorry for you guys crashing so hard to earth. The pens butt pounded your habs so hard they can't walk straight any more.

And, everyone one pounded your TMLs Butts. Their butts are so beaten so bad; they needs depends!

What do TML players and fans have in common:
1. They start golfing at the same time every year.
2. They never have to worry about the playoffs cutting into their golf schedule.
3. They haven't held the Stanley Cup since 1967!
4. They always say next year!

Geek, Tsk, Tsk!
Tsk, Tsk, what ?

The guy is a slug, and a troll.

The only time he ever shows up is when the Habs win a game. He has nothing to add to the dialogue, and stays under his rock when the Canadiens lose.

Give em some credit at least their loyal.

All these years of futility and they still show up in droves to support their team.

I wonder how many other cities would support their team as hardily as the Leaf fans with so little return.

This is amazing! The Canadiens have won 24 Cups and Henri Richard's name is on 11 of them.

BTW: On an unrelated matter, I just heard that Sandra Bullock has had her son's genitals mutilated.

Don't forget though in Richards day the Habs had the pick of all Quebec players.

Too bad that had to come to an end for the Hab fans.

On that unrelated matter Rocky I think Sandra would have Jesse's genitals mutilated if she could as well.
