So I'm thinking about taking the plunge. Going with Rogers. Thoughts? Tips? Recommendations? Not a heavy user in terms of data/voice plan...

Out being curious
regardless of what version u get or whcih provider....make sure and get the unlimited data plan....it will save u a major hassle in the end...

I have 5...yes 5 friends who got an iphone and had bills over $900 each with the most expensive being $1200....

the reason rogers gave..was that regardless of your plan..your iphone will always be trying to update the newest data...so regardless if ur on it..its going surfing...so they all had major data charges...all of them got their bill reduced by about $500 but still owed the rest...

The only thing u can do is..cancel data...but you must pay a $100 dollar fee...and it renders ur iphone useless unless ur in a wifi zone....

Best advice...get the unlimited data!

Cheers...

btw my bill for my ipone is $85 a month..worth it IMO

You cannot get unlimited data.. for a limited time Rogers had 6gb plans, but it was a promotion only for the first month of or so that the phone was out.

Unlimited data plan is not available with the iPhone. I'm with Fido and I have the 500MB plan and I came close once and I got a text message telling me I'm at 75 or 80%. Which was not a problem as it was close to the end of my billing period. thecuriousgeorge's friends may not have had a data plan at all & their push settings were very short or using their phones for to connect their laptops to the Internet.

I use my phone for all sorts surfing and web related apps and never had a problem. I also connect to wifi where ever it is available.

Buying iPhone or any smart phone is no problem they are wonderful electronic gadgets of great use with a majic box in hands:)
But be very careful with which server company you choose, as all the Top Three Big Guns are totally rip-off's over here in Canada & once you sign a 36-months contract with any of them they treat you like a shit with their arrogant behaviour, high package prices, their replacement policies, offering phone on loan, while your smart-phone has gone for its repairs to its manufacturer, and all sorts of problems start once they know you are with them for looooooooooooooong 36-months even after paying from upto your nose for the hard-ware.
In USA Smart-phones of practically all brands are just available on a 2-year contract from any of their server companies just for $ 69.99 whereas over here they have mandatory made 3 years contract a must, and that also they are heavily charging like $ 199 for 16GB & $ 299 for 32 GB Iphones. Why dont you try the new server company which launched its services two months ago and another server company is opening its doors this spring over here in GTA, due to this reason Rogers have already started lowering its prices on cell phones from now only, plus their dealers like Future Shop is also offering Gift Card worth $75 to the buyer of Black-Berry Bold 9700 making it cheap just for $ 129 only from their earlier high prices, & even Bell & Telus have also dropped their prices as far as cell phones are concerned.

I have been using an iPhone for a year now. I am with Fido. I have the basic plan for 60 per month. I don't use it for work and have WIFI at home. I have never gone over my 500MB DATA Limit. I do use it for DATA on the G network but the bulk of my use is on WIFI.

Get a case and screen covers(matt not clear) for the phone. I bought my the same time as the phone. It looks brand new every time I take it out of the case to replace the screen film. I have dropped mine a number of times no issue so far. But ...buy the extended Apple care plan.

They are selling G iPhones really cheap. Unless you need video that is a better option. I have an App that gives me limited video.

As others are saying, don't buy into the hype. I hate apple products simply for their arrogance. There are many MANY other smart phones out there that will do everything you want and do it extremely well. The new android based phones are awesome. I have been learning recently about smart phones and experimenting. I have sound the Samsung Omnia (the sim version Omnia II) is an awesome phone with a 5 mp camera with xenon flash and everything.

Another thing to note is unless you sign on with a long contract, the phone will cost you hundreds and HUNDREDS of dollars. It is far cheaper (in the long run) to simply buy a good smart phone for $2 or 300.00 and then go with no contract so you can move as rates change. Wind, Dave and others are coming so rates and plans should drop. I believe Wind now has an unlimited data plan.

Another thing with Iphones is you have little to no choice on plans with any carrier. They have smart phone plans then they have Iphone plans and I believe the minimal Iphone plan starts at $60.00 per month. And yeah, it constantly hooks up to data for updates where smart phones update through your sync with your PC.

I have two: one for work and one for "home". I have an HTC touch, ok phone, not the greatest for texting etc and is windows based. I have yet to be able to connect to a WiFi network with it. My "home" phone is a nokia expressmusic and is a cool little phone. I bought it so I can eliminate an MP3 player and it rocks for music and videos. I can connect it to my TV to play videos, any stereo with an aux input to play music (I play it in my truck for music on the road and through my Dewalt battery charger for music at work).

If I was to buy another it would either be the blackberry Storm or storm II or the Omnia.

I paid $99.00 for the HTC touch at best buy (factory refurbished but was perfect when it arrived) and the Expressmusic at The Source for $149.00 with no contract.

Oh, and on other thing? To unlock most Non-iphones it can be as little as $2.00 and take 1 minute. You simply get your phone ID, send it to an online unlocking service, they give you a number, you punch it in and voila, unlocked. I have heard of more than a few people "bricking" their Iphone while trying to jailbreak it......

don't get one

no keyboard - hope you enjoy touch screen typing, which takes up half the screen when you type

apps - they're all junk, nothing yet that you would truly need

bottom line - it's a toy

well, would you expect anything less from an appledrone? I have yet to hear ANYONE who owns an apple product badmouth it because, that would mean they fucked up.........

As for touch screen typing, I personally like it. For those that don't, and would rather have a qwerty keyboard, there are a LOT of phones out there that do that like the Nokia N97.

.
Got it!...thanks for clearing it up for me.

But that would lead me to more questions.

If Apple products are so bad why are they still in business and why are so many creative businesses Mac based?

Is EVERY person using a Mac (or Apple product) a moron?

Why are so many people around the world lisitening to Ipods? 100% all Morons?

How could a company OBVIOUSLY building CRAP still attract customers and investors? Ignorant Morons?

Thanks for clearing this up. I'm confused here!

I suggest you try typing on one before you buy. Borrow a friend's and try to tap out an email message. Typing on the things is a nightmare, I find. If you already have a blackberry or if you don't intend to do much email or texting, then it may not matter to you. The iphone beats all hell out of blackberries for web surfing - they are in a completely different league in that regard. But if the primary purpose of your buying a smartphone is to send emails or texts, the iphone is not a good option.

lol the people in this thread who are bashing the iphone are the ones who have never had one.
i have both a BB and an iphone, bb strictly for work and iphone for my personal use

its not even close which phone i prefer, once u jailbreak an iphone the possibilities are endless. oh and btw jailbreaking is now as simple as plugging ur phone into ur computer and pushing a button, takes about 20 sec
go with the iphone and ull never look back
the apps are what make the iphone and no phone on the market comes remotely close to offering the number of apps the iphone has

I did tech support for iPhone when it came out.... In the states, they got a very reasonable unlimited data plan. Launch in Canada was delayed 2 years because Rogers was the only company that could handle it nationally, and refused to give and unlimited data plan.

My advice.... buy an ipod touch and a wireless router for home.... then just buy yourself a cool cell phone for cell phone use.

If you feel you must have iPhone, then shop around for the best rates. I would never go with Rogers in a million years myself.

- advice above about getting a case is very good.
- careful around toilets too... they have a nasty habit of slipping out your pocket and "Splash!"
- Buy the Protection Plan.... Apple is very good at sending out new ones if they can't fix it over the phone.
- if the earphones die... keep them. Apple will only send out new ones if you send the old ones back.

Cheers!
