Who is Angel Di Maria and why does Manchester City think he's worth 35 million euros?

A perfect financial storm is about to overwhelm professional football, consider the evidence. Roman Abramovich has just under-written Chelsea's debt of 327 million euro's. Liverpool and Manchester United are a combined debt load of over 2.5 billion euros. The entire Primera Liga is in the red. And attendance is Seria A is in steep decline due to loutish supporters and dilapidated infrastructure. Since football clubs can no longer turn a profit, new investors cannot be found. In a year's time clubs like Valencia and Lazio may cease to exist.

Transfer fees (what did Chelsea pay for Mikel) and salaries are out of whack and yet big clubs continue to spend like retarded billionaires. Since they are the King's team and have access to Spain Treasury, Real Madrid is preparing to spend 160 million euros for Frank Ribery and Wayne Rooney - yet Spain has Western Europe's worst unemployment. Manchester United want Sebastien Frey to replace EVDS for next season - Fiorentina (who has already gone through bankruptcy) will drive a brutally hard bargain.

The irony all this is that the owner who started this madness, Silvio Berlusconi, may actually be in a position to benefit. He's been quite frugal with his spending recently, consequently his club financial ledger is beginning to look healthy. AC Milan will inevitably lose to ManU in the CL but they will get the last laugh. It is almost a lock that Nemanja Vidic will be wearing red and black next season.

Can you say: "Salary cap" They (leagues) need it in a bad way.

Salary cap will not solve any problems, the only thing good that it does is expose horrible management. Look at the NFL every single year it seems the good teams are the Pats and the Colts and every single year the crap is the Browns and Raiders.

I think its a bit of a stretch to say that Real Madrid have access to government money, they along with their rivals have a system called 'socios' of the club (the members of the club). There are something like 80,000 socios, you have to be a socio to buy season tickets, the socios vote for the president of the club, and theoretically the socios are ultimately responsible for any debts of the club. Each four years, the members of the club choose the new president in a elections (The president must be member of the club). The elected president choose his board of directors, and they manage the club during the next four years, being responsible for the debt of the club during that period. The president and the board of directors work for free for the club, the rest of employees have their salary

Saying that they have access to the Spanish government or Madrid government treasury is equal to claiming Osama Bin Laden is a CIA agent :D

Scouser1 may you never lose your penchant for dripping sarcasm. lol

Yes I know about the socio system, it's commendable but limited. Real had to sell valuable real estate to get out of debt in the early 90's. Presently, Real's debt is pushing 500 million euros and rocketing upwards. If the socios wish to line-up to the soup kitchen that's their prerogative.

Chievo 1 Juventus 0

The bianconeri comedy of errors continues. The deal to return Davide Lanzafame to Torino has floundered. This is bad news for Diego, Lanza would have made his role infinitely easier. If you need a reason to fire Alessio Secco this is it. I'm inclined to believe that he's a Moratti proxy - how do you fail to bring back a player that you already own!:D

And Scouser, NO SOUP FOR YOU.

How the mighty are falling.

So where is the money to buy Sebastien Frey going to come from. Do they expect Fiorentina to acquiesce out of awe to their greatness?
This is the problem, everyone ignored the debt that the Glazers ran up because Man Utd were winning trophies, now they have to pay the piper. It seems that there are quite a few teams in EPL that are a mess financially, Portsmouth, Liverpool and now Man Utd are the ones we know about.

Possibly, but I am thinking Blaugrana or All White. Better weather in Spain than Milano.
You're probably right, Milan want the Serb but they don't need him. As a unit; Abate, Silva, Nesta, Antonini may presently be Europe's strongest defense. I just hope Leonardo doesn't do something stupid like starting Zambrotta when he's healthy. With Abate's pace behind him, Beckham barely has to do any running at all. He could play till he's 45.

I expect AC to deliver a thorough beating to Inter when they collide this coming weekend.

Is it just me or is that the tamest most uninteresting derby in the world? none of the hatred and venom of a Roma-Lazio, Celtic-Rangers or a Fenerbahce-Galatasary, even a hammer and nail rivalry like Arsenal-Tottenham Hotspur generates better sparks.

Skewed transfer market.

Real Madrid have tabled a 50 million euro bud to Roma for DDR. Florentino Perez has never hidden his admiration for the player and attempted to bring him to the Bernebau during his first term as Club President. The move was rejected by the player.

Vfl Wolfsburg have informed Ac Milan that the price-tag for striker Edin Dzeko is 40 million euros. I don't understand this move. With Marco Borriello finally hitting his stride, why would they upset club chemistry by bringing in an expensive unproven player?

Juventus have signed midfield prodigy Antonio Candreva. After the Lanzafame debacle I'm surprised they were able to pull this off. It must mean that former 1978 World Cup hero and ex- Toronto Blizzard star Roberto Bettega is now Club Director.

As a Real Madrid supporter I would love for DDR to come over, but I've also read reports an offer might be made for Gerard and Silva. I don't see both of those players coming over unless Lass, Gago and Guti are sent packing. I think Guti and Gago for sure, but not Lass.

Gago packing, quite possible. Guti won't be packing until his nails are done and his hair is styled....just.....so.

Hey IV, 9-man Inter beat AC, I didn't see the game but "The Special One" seems to think the fix was in. Any truth? is Calciopoli back? or did it ever go away? Intersted in your thoughts on the matter.

Why are Northern Ireland, England & Scotland in Capital letters?

What significance could this possibly have? Favorites in their group? If so, why are other groups lacking Capitals?

It's a Rule Britannia thing.

It's what separates the Supreme Beings from the noxious masses. The irony is that Britannia is the Roman name given to the land mass that presently comprises England and Wales. Scotland was known as Caledonia - or painted bastards. Take your pick.

Ya got that first part right :D hehehe

but seriously looks like a cut and paste job from the BBC which tends to focus on the British sides, of course talk to the Scots and they complain that the Republic of Ireland gets more coverage than their side does!!! well maybe if your side actually did something interesting once in awhile other than squander every qualifying tourney they would get a mention!!! And good luck getting out of a group that has the Czechs and Spanish.

Didn't see any of the games today...but everything went Arsenal's way, which is a turn of fortune considering how crap they were versus ManU/Chelski. While the league may be beyond them, they will make a strong push down the stretch. They have an easier schedule the rest of the way so I still think they can make it interesting - that or its blind faith.

Redknapp should change his tune after losing at Wolves though, they'll be lucky to get 5th.
