I know with the NHL, Juniors and the Olympics this event recieves little press but it an amazing sporting tournament.

Lots of interesting history in this event:
Berliner SC (made up of serving Nazi soldiers) even finished 2nd in 1941.
Oxford University won 2 tournaments in 1923 and 1925 and their captian both times was none other than Lester B. Pearson.
Soviets, mostly Spartak Moscow and Leningrad, dominated in the 60's and 70's as you'd expect.
A team of USA Selects won in 1988 made up primarily of veterans from the "Miracle on Ice" US team at the Lake Placid '84 Olympics.

For those who don't know:
Spengler Cup is an annual ice hockey tournament held in Davos, Switzerland. Originally held in 1923, the Spengler Cup tournament is one of the oldest international ice hockey club team tournaments in the world. The tournament, entry to which is by invitation, is hosted by the Swiss team HC Davos. The tournament is played each year in Davos, Switzerland, between Christmas and New Year's Day. It features HC Davos, 3 championship teams from around Europe, primarily Russia, Czech Rep., Germany, and a team of Canadian Selects.

Canadian Selects have won the tournament 11 times.

Yesterday's Canada Selects 7 Karlovy Vary (Czech) 6 was a great game. Lots of action in a shootout.
The Canadian team is made up of Canadians who play in Europe. Coached this year by Craig McTavish they only had 2 practices together before the tourney. Remember Alexadre Daigle? He got a few goals yesterday.

It's on Sportsnet if you want to check it out.

The crowds in Europe go wild for the Spengler Cup. It generates much more excitement than events like the WJC.

even the refs are covered in advertisements - what a joke!
What's a joke is that if the NHL used advertising the way they do in Europe then your $100 Leafs purple nosebleed seat would probably be $60 or even $50. The advertising dollars they get offset ticket prices greatly.

Yeah, sure. If the Leafs made more money on advertising, they'd charge less for tickets.
...

You are correct. DJ knows not of what he speaks.

100% of the revenue increase would go to the players and owners.

Owners only...what else do you expect from the Teachers Pension Fund, take in but don't spend.
The players are guaranteed a percentage of revenues according to the CBA.

And teachers or not, the Leafs are probably among the top spending teams in terms of payroll.

Anything else you want me to contradict?:D
