It's unfortunate that such a large county such as China doesn't understand basic diplomatic protocols.
LOL!
It looks like they understand it pretty well and acted accordingly...

There are plenty of other places, closer, to acquire cheap resources....;)
If you mean Russia they have a trust issue, the Chinese need our potash ,coal , and oil, the supply is more dependable than the russian supply, just look at the Ukrain and points west every winter with the natural gas lines from russia.

I think that Landscaper raises a good point.

Russia and China are not natural allies - true they have reached an understanding - but both are rivals for influence in the region. Certainly the Chinese are settling and taking over towns in Siberia right now and that cannot make the Russians too comfortable.

China and the US cannot afford to take Canada too lightly because the name of the game right now is energy and we have a lot of it. Another major commodity in the future will be water and we have a substantial amount of the world's fresh water supply. Both the US and China are facing water shortages.

Canada's influence in the world I believe is actually growing and not diminishing. I think you will see Canadian financial institutions (banks and insurance companies) acquire financial assets all over the world.

The fact that China rebuked Canada and made such a show of it, is in itself an indication of the importance of the relationship. If they really wanted to snub Canada they would have just ignored us.

What I think that we saw in Beijing was a diplomatic dance. Harper was willing to take the slap in return for greater trade. I do not think that Harper could go any further with human rights - he made his point. China needs the access to the resources and we are good customers.

I think the interesting question that would have significant implications in the US and China is - what would happen if Canada started to develop close relations with Russia. We share many of the same issues and resources so we have a great deal in common. If we could reach an understanding in the Arctic that could shut everyone else out. Our two countries would control at least half the global oil supply. We could create our own OPEC. This is not something I think either would like to see.

Harper poses a difficult problem for the Chinese as he cannot be bought off like the rest of the Canadian prime ministers.

It is an interesting conundrum. Do we make a point of human rights issues and lose trade or swallow our good intentions and take the money?

The chinese have a massive overabundance of cheap stuff right now, the drop off in the american markets is worrisome for them, what happens if Walmart stops sbuying lead impregnated childrens toys?

The upcomming chinese middle class is a target for anything that resembles a marketer 300000000 of them with disposable incomes or at least they will have in teh semi imediate future, assuming the govt allows offshore manufacturing of stuff .

Interesting Times

Personally I would have liked the PM to reply with

well 5 years might be a long time between visits,

but then 20 years without an explanation of Tianamin Square seems excessive

3 years in prison for distributing an anti olympic petition seems a bit long

30 years in exile for the Dahli LAma a little excessive

But then this is international politics apparantly you are not allowed to do things like that, and that could be part of the reason I am not in Politics

Gee and you didn't even mention:

Why do you have the Panchen Lama under arrest in what you have described as "protective custody." Who does the boy need to be protected from other than you!

What scares you so much about Falun Gong that you persecute its practitioners.

Why are you so deathly afraid of Christianity in China.

Heaven, definately Heaven
I'd like Jintao to explain why Chinese of other countries, when entering into China, have to renounce their citizenship? Why the Yuan is a bogus currency? What is China hiding be not becoming a democracy? Similar to Russia's excuse when it was the U.S.S.R.?

But, so long as I get laid in Hong Kong and Macau, no need to answer. But this recession sucks and I want to get laid in Hong Kong and Macau.

Related to that presumably you know that Chinese children who are adopted in the West are given very limited duration passports that are revoked and their Chinese Nationality "renounced" the instant that they acquire citizenship in their adoptive homeland. Perhaps the PRC is the model for the Borg, deathly afraid of the collective being infected by the virus of Western educated nationals.

Apropos an article on the Government of China and Sinkiang, in particular the city of Kashgar.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/wor...ina-threatens-obliterate-ancient-culture.html
What an insult to call Xinjiang as Sinkiang, just like calling China's capital as Peking instead of Beijing.

Perhaps some Brits find it hard to describe those places in Mandarin.

Regarding Sinkiang/Xinjiang, it's inevitable to see the parallel between the Han Chinese settled there and their West Bank Settlers counterparts, except there will be more Han Chinese swamping those places with additional military reinforcement when necessary. This would be something the Israelis could never be able to achieve.

Do not be surprised the Chinese paramilitaries/PLAs are copying, fine tuning and expanding similar tactics the Magav/IDF counterparts frequently use since 1967 in the West Bank and Golan Heights, assuming some reserved IDF special force officers came to China and be "security consultants" to help the PLA to tackle the issues and hopefully the Chinese will purchase military products from IMI or start-ups for example.

Harper should have replied with:

"Five years is also too long to go without an election"

or:

"Five years is also too long to be imprisoned for open dissent against the government"
