The good ppl at Tim Hortons (TDL = tims donuts limited) had asked for, and been granted private meetings with various gov't officials to fight Ontario's proposed Min Wage increase.

They don't seem to care that the wages they pay keep ppl in poverty, but the corporate fat cats, live high off the hog. Do you have any idea how many District Managers, District Supervisors, Directors of Operation, and Marketing, Training and Distribution, and VP's (of this and of that), there are, and what they all make??? Yet they will gladly sacrifice that nice lady behind the counter, making them money, to save their own fat pay cheques.

Over 3000 stores.... and each DM has between 10 and 20 stores to watch... and depending on tenure and bonuses, they all make over $100 000/yr. God forbid the lady actually doing the work makes an extra quarter an hour!!!

Funny, I don't remember voting for Tim Horton to make those decisions for me? And I don't see them throwing that all over the TV screen.... lol. And why all the secrecy if they have nothing to hide?

Please boycott Tim Hortons and email this to a friend.

If this is true, and Tims is allowed to be the exception, you can pretty much expect every chain retailer/service provider (ie restraunts, not our sort of SP) to quickly jump in line.

They don't want to be the exception.... they just want the min wage hike cancelled entirely.

When the Gov't cancels it from corporate presure (as I'm sure Tims is not alone on this.... probable partnered with McDonalds, etc, in a united front), don't be surprised that the gov't cites the economy as the reason.... They'll say Ontario small business can't afford it... blah blah blah.

I go to tiims for no other reason than convenience.

I order my bagle and chocolate milk as i don't drink coffee.

Whether it cost 4 bucks or 5 bucks won't change my buying habits, so if it costing 5 bucks gives the poor lady working there a bit of raise, so be it.

It's unfortunate, considering it's hard to staff a TH.
Raising wages could help more than hinder.

That said, enough people go to a TH, I'd rather support an Independent cafe instead.

While I agree employees are underpaid and the capitalist on the top gets disproportional amount of profit there are two sides to every story ...

Increase was planned before recession They want to delay increase until recession over

1 Raise wages
2 coffee price goes up
3 now less customers
4 so fewer employees

But that is always argued for any victory for the working stiff whether it be minimum wage, paid holidays, benefits, safe working conditions, unions ...

I used to be a timmies drinker a couple of times a day. I then quit drinking coffee. Wanted to live a healthier lifestyle, quit smoking, drinking, all fast food, eveything.

Every once in a while, I would still grap a timmies. Maybe once every 2 weeks. A meduim unstead of a X-large and even then I don't finish them now.

Having heard this, I am quite dis-hearted. After so many years of inflation with no change to min. wage and then finally a small increase but no where near enough. There needs to be another increase in min. wage.

At $10/hour before taxes on a 40hour a week job is $1600/month. We all know most don't get 40 hours and after deductions, there is not alot there. Rent alone on most places is $800-$1000 for decent place in a some what safe neighborhood. How are people suppose to live?

I will take my coffee cravings somewhere else after this. I am never one to jump on the boycott bandwagon, but this is just too much. :(

BTW - it was just 2 months ago or so Timmies raised their rates on many of their products. While I understand this was planned before the recession, it doesn't really matter. Timmies can up their rates, they can pay employees more. Who knows? Maybe raising min. wage, might get more people spending more money and get back to fueling the economy.

"Corporate fat cats?" Your rhetoric is amusing.
Thank you for noticing....

I will add. This news is not recent. Well before the recent price increases. They were simply a fair Inflation adjustment store owners voted on...... It was when the Min Wage hike was announced, they were knocking on the door seeking audience...

Furthermore, I have no idea how those talks went, if they were received well, or dismissed.

I do know they specifically said if the min wage goes up, it will force stores to close. I have no idea whether that is a fair statement or not, nor do I care.

I'm just pissed they actually get to do that in secret. Again, I didn't vote for Tim Horton, and he should not have any say in how much my family earns.... especially since we don't work there. Again, "the corporate fat cats" will cut stores lose and kill jobs before they take any pay cut.

Minimum wage is going up I believe $.75 three years in a row, thanks again Dalton, so from $8 to $10.25. So now for some 14 year old that can't spell and has to be trained over and over for the simplest thing is soon going to get $10.25 that is a large burden for a small business, and most Timmies are small businesses. Now comrades back to beating up on employers.....

maximum wage??

In my youth I thought it would be a splendid idea to have a maximum wage and in a few years I thought it was unworkable. After watching the debacle in the US, the raw greed, I am once again in favour of a maximum wage. Unworkable or not, thieves should be in jail.

Yeah, that's a great idea. I'm sure all the wealthy investor types who create jobs will gladly take the millions of dollars paycut instead of just going to another country that doesn't have a max wage.

As for the min wage, I'm somewhat conflicted. On the one hand, the current min wage is unlivable but on the other, there's no way that businesses will absorb the cost of the increase. They'll pass it on to the consumer, creating inflation, causing the new min wage to become horrible as well, and so on, and so on. There seems to be no good solution to that.

But... are you ok with corporations having secret meetings with gov't officials trying to influence policies that have direct impact on you.... all the while putting up tv spots telling us they're wonderful for sending kids to camp...

"Protect the Brand"

Personally, I don't care what Min Wage is... I don't make, nor do I pay it. I'm just telling you, don't buy into there carefully crafted media bullshit where they're sending kids to camp, and teaching poor coffee bean peasants how to be businessmen. Because if they were... they'd be teaching these ppl how to screw over the other peasants and make a fat pay cheque from it!

Again, that doesn't make for a good tv spot either.
