Yea that one was okay too. I believe James Arness aka Matt Dillion played the Thing!

He did
but can you name his two famous brothers?

I'm just glad the Exorcist is at the top of the list. The ones all about blood and gore just don't do it for me.

However, one that isn't on the list and should be is The Evil Dead. I know, I know, it's really a comedy (it seriously has me laughing; Bruce Campbell is the greatest over-actor of all time; okay, maybe a close second to Shatner), but I freaking loved it. Sam Raimi, you are a genius.

I was a few years too young to see The Exorcist when it was first released in '73, but remember stories of moviegoers vomiting and running out of theatres due to the very graphic visuals back then, tame by today's standards.
Yeah, I was way too young as well... but managed to watch it on TV a few years later when CityTV played it. Remember the controversy that generated?

I just googled James Arness, no mention of 2nd brother, so who is it?

Memory serves it is Feliciano.

Contrary to the net I recall the 3 of them on the MIKE DOUGLAS show as brothers.

Saw the first Hostel, never needed to see the next one,,,,,Oh and the New Chainsaw Massacre ? Yikes.,,, could have gone my whole life quite happily without having seen that, ditto for The Hills Have Eyes,,,,,Wrong Turn, and a bunch of others

Won't see (LOL): 14

Although Friday the 13th was a little scary, especially with Jason and the boat scene at the end, it was the scene where Jason came through the window in Friday the 13th Part 2, that scared the living shit out of me too. And if anyone saw Part 3 in actual 3-D in the theater (like me), that was a perfect trilogy. I don't see how anyone finds "A Nightmare on Elm Street" scary at all. The higher numbers were just jack-off material later on.

I hate Zombie movies and won't see any. Oh yeah, that scene with Tom Skerritt in the tube trying to get the alien was just too scary. I jumped a mile.

I have to agree with you here, all the new movies are just schlock, slice and dice. The saw movies are just gore fests and after watching the first one, don't need to see any others.

A few newer ones that deserve honourable mention:
The Mist
Seven
Quarantine

The Friday the 13th and, to a lesser extent, the Nightmare on Elm Street franchises get a bad rap which is mostly due to the serious decline in quality as the franchises progressed.

The original Friday the 13th was actually pretty good so far as horror films go. It wasn't all blood and guts and sex like in the sequels. The director used the same technique as in Jaws where you didn't see the killer until well into the movie. There was a lot of suspense re: who the killer actually was.

I also remember the first Nightmare on Elm Street to be a pretty scary movie.

But as with most franchises, it quickly became all about releasing the next flick in the franchise rather than paying any attention to whether the script for the next flick was any good or not.

I watched the 1978/79 Dracula movie on AMC last week (the one with Sir Lawrence Olivier as Van Helsing) and it was really good! Even the 1970 special effects (cheesy by today's standards) must have been pretty good for the time. There was a surprising amount of violence too, which I wasn't expecting.

The original family name is Aurness, so if you thought it was Feliciano, you're wrong. The family is Norwegian/German, so Jose doesn't sound like a likely first name... plus he's Puerto Rican. So thanks for pulling our legs!!

Actually, James Carpenters: Vampires was a pretty decent movie, forgot to mention that.

I mean, I'm surprized no one mentioned the (in)famous:
Plan 9 from outer space! lol.....
