Grade 1 boy suspended for 45 days for have a spork (half fork, half spoon) on his person to eat his lunch and threatened with reform school. He's now being home schooled.

Senior in high school suspended for 20 days for having a 2 inch blade folding knife in his survival kit IN HIS CAR. Snitched on by a 'friend'. He's an eagle scout, an ROTC cadet and the knife was gift from his 'police chief' uncle.

They should probably have brought guns. Apparently that is allowed.

From the news report I had seen it was not a spork it was in fact a camp knife. Similar to a swiss army knife. Complete with fork and spoon.

Zero tolerance

This is what happens when you adopt zero tolerance policies. Give school administrators the leeway to judge situations on their merits. I have zero tolerance for zero tolerance.

Next thing you know, the kids will be running with scissors.

And, the school security will yell, STOP or I'll yell STOP again before you shoot my ass.

What they are not doing is stopping the reason for violence

A lot of it is self defense against bullies and gangs

Put all the gangs and all the bullies with the kids who wanna learn in the same school and .... the solution is obvious, melting pots are a bad idea we are human beings not a stew

Kind of ironic, "the right to bear arms"
But not in schools.

Frankly, both of these school districts are nuts. But that is what happens when one has this sort of knee jerk rule. I'm waiting for the posts from the bigger more intrusive government is great gang.

I've never liked zero tolerance in any application of the law.

What had made our system the best in the world is the fact that even with 'the law is the law', everyone involved in enforcing the law has been allowed leeway in interpreting the law and taking 'appropriate actions', from the beat cop and social worker all the way up to the Supreme Court judges. Zero tolerance has run amuck in drug laws for possession, domestic law for spousal abuse, and the Highway Traffic Act for racing and alcohol use.

These school stories are just more of the same example of total laziness and 'not my fault' shit.

A knife and an AK-47.

Gyaos.
The first I've heard about the the AK-47, but the point was they were in the car not on his person or in his locker. Do we know if he can have the rifle yet? Mind you being the US, the answer is probably yes.

Where did you read that there was a firearm?

Everything I've read indicates that there was a pocketknife with a two-inch blade which was locked in his parked car, no mention of any firearm whatsoever.

These situations are a logical consequence to the policies which were started many years ago taking discipline out of the classroom.

First, teachers were not allowed to enforce discipline. So students misbehaved, with a small percentage causing great problems. In reaction to those few causing problems, "Zero-tolerance" policies were brought forward, in a misguided attempt to remove weapons from those few who were causing problems. Now, if a four-year-old has a spork they can be suspended from school.

In all cases, the bullies and troublemakers are given even more power as the tools for discipline are removed: bullies use intimidation and their fists more than weapons.

Sure, weapons should be removed from all students. But administrators need to be held responsible for making a determination regarding what is and is not a weapon, and not have policies applied to things which are not a threat.

Even more important, administrators need to be held responsible for the discipline of those under their charge, and be provided tools (such as isolation from the rest of the student body) for those who do cause trouble.

The direct news coverage indicates that there was no firearm, and that the pocketknife in question is not even considered a weapon under state law, although it was covered under the clause which covers anything which could reasonably be used as a weapon. Like, say, a sharpened pencil, or a tire iron. Or a heavy textbook.
