The direct news coverage indicates that there was no firearm, and that the pocketknife in question is not even considered a weapon under state law, although it was covered under the clause which covers anything which could reasonably be used as a weapon. Like, say, a sharpened pencil, or a tire iron. Or a heavy textbook.
I heard on the radio that when the police arrived after having been called by the school the conversation went along the lines of: The Police "this isn't a weapon" whereupon the Assistant Principal said "well to my mind it is."
