With a little help from my "friends"...

... do you suppose he was talking about Jack Layton? :p

Jokes aside, it was actually nice to see Harper relaxed and comfortable for once... sitting at the piano, in front of all those people, he almost seemed to be enjoying himself.

Kudos to the guy for getting up there in the first place. It won't win him any extra votes, but think of the backlash he would have suffered if he had sucked!

The only significance of the song choice was...getting by (in a minority government) with a little help from his friends.
He should have had Jack Layton on guitar and Duceppe on drums!

Kudos to Harper though....good move, gutsy move. That will get more positive coverage than Iggy's woodland nymph spots....Hinterlands Who's Who????

Still that song isn't much different than if he did the Beatles LSD song, Lucy In the Sky With Diamonds!.....
Lucy In the Sky with Diamonds has nothing to do with LSD and never had. That is just a myth. In fact, the inspiration came from a classmate of Julian Lennons and a picture she drew. Her name was Lucy Vodden and she died recently of Lupus.

BS!
I went through that 'Flower Power' era. At that time the Beatles themselves admitted to experimenting with the drugs of the day and LSD was one they admitted taking. While the Lucy Vodden story may be true, we all back then knew what they were singing about and it wasn't Lucy Vodden....;)

The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, Janis Jopin, Jefferson Airplane were a few of the other major groups who had big hits dealing with drug usage back then.

.

Right.....because you know better than the guy who wrote it who told the story about Lucy Vodden and some drawing they did in his son's class

Back then you may have just been too stoned to know what was real.....sometimes a rose is just a rose ( to murder at least one metaphor).

Of course that could be very true but it doesn't discount the song could have a 'dual' meaning or other levels of interpretation.

Artists write many songs with several meanings, Puff The Magic Dragon by PP&M is another perfect example.......

Hmm...who to believe. Random internet guy, or Sir Paul McCartney:

"He added it was "pretty obvious" that Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds was inspired by LSD, and other songs made "subtle hints" about narcotics."

Yes but it's not a Sir Paul McCartney song, it was written by John Lennon. Therefore, if Julian Lennon says it's about his classmate's drawing, I tend to believe him.

Typical Harper move.
He tries to paint himself as an arts supporter by trying out a beatles cover but
a) he's still making cuts to the arts
b) he's doing a cover of a british tune - doesn't he know any canadians?

least arts friendly pm in decades.

You may want to check the writing credit again: Lennon/McCartney. So, if the guy who co-wrote the song and spent 40+ years performing it says it was inspired by LSD, I'll take his word over that of a kid who was 3 when it was written. This is not to say that there is no truth to the story about the drawing, but there was an initial assertion by a poster that the song had nothing to do with LSD. That is clearly false.

From Wiki

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lucy_in_the_Sky_with_Diamonds

"Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" is a song by English rock band The Beatles, written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney for the group's 1967 album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.

At the time of its release, the Beatles claimed that the inspiration for the song came from a drawing by John Lennon's son, Julian, which Julian called "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds". The song sparked controversy when released, including being banned by the BBC because of the supposed reference to the drug LSD,[1] with the letters of the title spelling Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds. Lennon would later deny the reference during an interview with Rolling Stone. Despite John Lennon's denial of the title and content of the song having to do with LSD,[2] on June 2, 2004, McCartney told BBC that the song is, in fact, about LSD
This just confirms what WE all knew back then.
The song was about LSD. The Beatles did get in trouble for looking like they were promoting drug use and most likely came up with Julian Lennon 'cover story' deflect the
'heat' they received for its drug references.
