I guess you buy all your tools at Canadian Tire and Walmart too? Love that Black and Decker - when it breaks you can buy another one just about anywhere!

You had me til you came to "…be able to get it serviced anywhere," tboy. Which, in my experience means, the PC folks are always asking if anyone knows a good servicenerd, while the Mac guys know and trust the coupla service centres if they ever need—like I said, once in twenty years for me—service.

And buy the richguy's yacht after he's finished putting all the posh chandlery into it.

Go with MAC, in the long run you are spending the same amount of money...

PC, if you don't have extended warranty on the software and hardware it will cost you about $200 dollars in upgrade....

And with PC it crashes a lot and you need to format your system...

My next laptop WILL BE a MAC....

As many as I can because a DeWalt is a Dewalt whether you buy it at Canadian Tire, Walmart, Princess Auto or Fastenal (btw, fastenal is typically 30% higher than anywhere else but hey, they're where the "pros" shop).

See, you hit on a good point: I buy Dewalt, they last forever, reasonably priced, and damn good tools. However I DON'T buy overpriced Milwaukee or Metabo just because of the name. Maybe they will last 10 yrs longer than dewalt? MAYBE but not at double the price.

I'd rather have a full compliment of tools than 4 really "good" ones and be left without......

Another good example is fein. They make amazingly engineered tools. They make a flush cut saw system. Sure, they are great, but so is the price: $500.00 and up for their master cut system. Instead I bought a Dremel for $99.99 and it does the same job. Will it last 20 yrs? Probably not but I can buy 5 of them for the same price and if anything happens to the one I have? I can buy another one anywhere and STILL be ahead of the game. Plus I can buy the accessories at any Home Depot, Canadian Tire, Princess Auto, Lowes. I don't have to special order them a week in advance from a custom tool supplier.....

Yup, and I can get it repaired just about anywhere. Unlike specialty tools like Fein etc where you have to send it back to the OEM and maybe get it in a month or two. What do you do in the meantime? Not work?

Sorry, any downtime in tools costs me money.........not only the time to take it in for repairs but the extra time it costs me to complete tasks that I need the tool for.

Sorry, once again, you can buy 2 decent laptops and keep one as a spare for the price of 1 mac. What happens when the mac breaks? You're screwed.

With a PC, you can just toss in anther drive, video card, memory, etc. You don't have to go to the icky poo specialty mac stores in your BMW and have THEM install memory.......

I went to Carbon Computing on Queen and it was like walking into yuppyville. It really reminded me of maranello motors up on Steeles. That's where they charge you $20.00 just to go in and look at the ferraris. I'm surprised Mac stores haven't thought of that.....to keep the riffraff out ya know lol.....

Buy PC and install Snow Leopard on it. OS X gives MUCH better computing experience. I only use Windows for gaming. OS X has much better UI (little differences here and there when compared to Windows) that makes OS X a superior OS than Windows 7.

I'll stick with PCs, especially after using Linux. BOTH run great!

bullshit.

Have to agree.
Still using a 12 yr old P2 that crashed only ONCE in that time due to a Gateway phone techie farking it up with the wrong solution 11 yrs ago. Had to reformat a least twice a year with Win 98. Since going to XP Pro haven't had to reformat that often, about once a year. Haven't had any real problems with Vista but it's seldom used preferring Linux. Believe most M$ problems are a result of people not understanding computer basics and proper PM. You don't have these worries with Linux.

Linux runs great, no crashes and no reformat necessary in over 3 yrs.
Linux just runs. Linux is more stable than M$ & Mac.

i.e. right now using Linux on that 12 yr old P2, I'm running a browser with 7 tabs open/running in Desktop 1, while Amarock is playing internet radio from Brazil on Destop 2, while running p2p Nicotine + on Desktop 3 searching & downloading a couple tunes I've been looking for. Oh, and in Desktop 4 there is a game of Chess running......

I could NEVER do this type multitasking with XP Pro on this old PC but Linux handles it pretty well.

Macs DO CRASH!
Saw this happen a couple years ago when an Apple salesmen was 'showing' me how a Mac was better than M$ & Linux. He was showing me how Mac could open more apps and windows than Linux which I was bragging about. Well he opened up one too many and the Mac locked up and crashed on him....

I also questioned why if Mac is as great as claimed, why do they push their extended warranty so? And they DO! The salesman said parts still fail but not as badly as PCs....

BTW, when I purchased a Toshiba laptop over a year and a half ago at half the price of a comparable Mac laptop, I passed on buying any extended warranty. So far, knock on wood, the Toshiba laptop has operated flawlessly.....

Gee WoodPeckr, you're starting to sound like a Linux salesman! lol

Anyways, this thread started out about laptops, when the discussion reverted back to the old Mac vs. PC arguments with comparisons on PII ageing machines and how well they still run, and comparisons about computers to DeWalt tools. This is the difference between a PC and a Mac (the people, not the computer). The PC thinks of their computer as just a tool, to buy the cheapest one possible for your basic needs (never thinking that it could allow you to do greater things with it), and to accept that it needs to be maintained (ask a Mac about maintaining their machine....they need to do very little of it!). Finally they accept that their cheap PC will be worth nothing in a couple of years and will probably need to get it replaced. But that's okay, because they paid very little for it to begin with! A Mac on the other hand really likes their computer, doesn't just think of it as a tool, but rather something they enjoy spending time with, allowing them to work or play in more creative ways than they wouldn't have with a PC (because it is so much easier and hassle free to use), and they know that even after 5 years, their Mac is still worth something on the resale market, unlike the cheapass clunky PC laptop covered in plastic panels with Intel and Windows stickers all over it. And when you see another Mac out in the wild (ie. at the airport or a local wifi cafe), you give each other the look that says that you both understand the difference, made the right decision and would probably never go back to the other side!

Anyways, Mable, I'll leave it up to you to decide what you choose to do. I'm officially done with this thread. WoodPeckr, you can continue making your silly comments about how wonderful your ancient PII is still running for you, as well as your ridiculous comments about the Mac salesman pushing the extended warranty (I HAVE NEWS FOR YOU, EVERY ELECTRONICS RETAILER ON THE PLANET DOES THIS FOR ANY ELECTRONICS PRODUCT MADE OUT THERE....DOES THIS MEAN THAT THE PRODUCT IS OF LOWER QUALITY?).

Ciao :)

LOL @ goomer, like I said: if you want to rub shoulders with the poo poo yachtsmen, buy a mac.

If you want a good computer for over half the price, buy a PC.

As for "using" it, don't kid yourself. Anything you can do with a mac, you can do just as easily with a pc.

Spend time with it? WTF is it, a GIRLFRIEND? If macsperts liken their mac to a BEING to spend time WITH, that just reinforces my idea that you're all whacked......

BTW: just in case you've forgotten, it's a fricken computer....NOT your girlfriend, your dog, or your room mate. It is a machine which translates numbers into various images, processes, or sounds.

I can see it now: Toronto Sun Headline: Apple user marries his laptop lol.....don't you think that's a little "bit" strange?

Thank you for reinforcing my previous post about the silly comments and the word/meaning twisting going on in this thread.

not twisting anything my friend: you're talking about spending time with it just because it's a mac.....I just elaborated on your concept......again, if you "like spending time with your mac" then you've got some serious issues....really!

Bump

Mable,
Here's your thread back from that cyber warp a couple days ago.

That cyber hiccup caused my post to become Post #1 (with a weird time/date stamp) and take over your thread!

LOL!
My post was originally meant as a response to Post #50 by that Mac Salesman Goomer!....:D

I don't know about that..to me, my MBP is just a tool. It works fine enough but I have no emo attachment to it. *shrug*

Weren't you calling people (about a month ago) who had difficulties with Linux stupid?
LOL!
Not at all....they were just Linux & M$ 'challenged'!

They needed something simple & easy to run, so they went to Mac.....

Play with It

Question to Wollensac: You povided a very crisp and forceful arguement and reasoning as to why Windows should not be used to browse. Can you refer me to any liturature that can do as good a job explaining things like you? I am sorely in need of it. You say that when using Linux the downloaded stuff goes into the data partition and is isolated. Is this what happens when one downloads using a Mac? In the demo I saw the salesperson said all the downloads go to a "special file". I assume this is it. Being a non techie I was wondering how do you get it out ( I do not know what an exe file is:eek:).

Answer: In Ubuntu, 99% of all available software is obtained from the Ububtu "mirror". You select the software you want from the "Synaptic Package Manager", which is available to you once you install Ubuntu on your computer. Ubuntu software is safe to use because it is proprietary - there is very little third party Linux code. An example of an exception is RealPlayer Gold for Linux that can be downloaded direct from Real.

Anything you download from the Synaptic Package Manager goes into the Program partition. You don't need to move it. Ubuntu will introduce you to the Synaptic immediately after you install because it will tell you there are new updates and will lead you through the process of running Synaptic to load the new updates.

Anything downloaded from anywhere else goes to the data partition. The assumption is that you are downloading videos, pictures or documents to look at. Even if you downloaded an executable file, it woul not be executable because Linux will not execute programs from the data partition. This is why hidden viruses can' t harm Linux, they are in the data partition and can't execute.

An exe is a windows executable program. "exe" is the suffix in the program name. So for example RealPlayer.exe is a windows executable program you can use to play audio or video files. In fact, if you double click on any file with an "exe" on the end, Windows will try and run it.

I sat down at the computer last night for several hours going to help sites for Ubuntu. Lots of help BUT I noticed that many had severe problems just trying to download to their computer so they could dual boot. Some of the language and terms I ccould not begin to understand. While I now have more desire than ever to become a quasi-techie, I know I need some source (understandable) information. Not stuff written techie to techie. Any references?

Answer:

I have loaded Ubuntu Linux on upwards of thirty different computers. In all cases I was on the Internet within an hour.

I started by loading Ubuntu on old desktop computers that I bought for as little as $15. I learned by doing, not by reading, and I am not a techie at all. Nearly all operating system knowledge is best achieved by trying things.

My advice would be to pick up an old Pentium 3 machine for $25 at a computer recycler,
add a monitor mouse and keyboard, put the Ubuntu disk in the CD-Rom drive, load the operating system and play with it. The Ubuntu install disk has everything you need to get started. You can load the same Ubuntu disk a second time, and the Ubuntu install program will detect that you already have Ubuntu installed and will offer you the option of having the two of them running sided-by-side, which is dual boot! Next time you power the machine up, you will be given a menu allowing you to choose which one you want to run!

I hate being at the mercy of the operating system I am using. I want to streamline it for my purposes and know what the fuck is going on. I almost took the plunge last night and attempted to download and install Ubuntu but I was on my girlfriends computer. I could feel it coming: GF: where are the pics I got from grandma last night, Dear? Me: What pics Dear? GF: Oh the ones I downloaded to my hard drive! Me: What hard drive Dear!!??

Answer:

As above, load an old expendable machine and play with it. What you learn will be transferable to other machines and operating systems. The older machines have had all the bugs ironed out and are Linux-ready. Most people having trouble with Linux are probably trying to install it on the very latest computers, which are probably experiencing teething probles regardless of what operating system is installed.i

Your advise is very sound, last poster. Anyone can pick up a decent mach. for $99 and dualboot it. Those old junkers you speak about. wouldn't run the latest linux distros that great either. Ram, vid card being factors. Even linux needs some leeway.

cheers, and good luck

There are linux distros that will run on 64mgs

please do fill us in, mac is mac diff ballpark. Windoze is windoze
