LOL reminds me of this intern we had at work who was there part time. Fancied himself as an activist who voted NDP. Few years later after he finished up school, I hired him full time and he got his first paycheck and was like "WTF"? Next election I find out he voted Conservative because he felt "it was wrong" to take all the money from him.

It's no surprise the most youth slant left politically.
It's because we teach them to share in kindergarten.

Reminds me of this story:

I asked my friend's little girl what she wanted to be when she grows up.

She said she wanted to be Prime Minister of Canada some day.

Both of her parents, NDP supporters, were standing there, so I asked her,

"If you were President what would be the first thing you would do?"

She replied, "I'd give food and houses to all the homeless people."

Her parents beamed, and said, "Welcome to the NDP Party!"

"Wow...what a worthy goal!" I told her.

I continued, "But you don't have to wait until you're Prime Minister to do that. You can come over to my house, mow the lawn, pull weeds, and sweep my yard, and I'll pay you $50. Then I'll take you over to the grocery store where the homeless guy hangs out. You can give him the $50 to use toward food and a new house."

She thought that over for a few seconds, then she looked me straight in the eye and asked,

"Why doesn't the homeless guy come over and do the work, and you can just pay him the $50?"

I smiled and said, "Welcome to the Conservative Party."

Her parents still aren't speaking to me.

It's because we teach them to share in kindergarten.
Yup. It's easy to share when all they have is given to them.

The old adage "Liberals are liberal with other people's money"

On the flip side, at the same place I work, I knew this old guy who was pretty conservative. Made fun of unions, tree-huggers, "socialists" (as he called them) and so on. Big backer of the CPOC. He gets laid off. Next when I see him, he's rambling about unemployment benefits are not big enough, how our industry (tech) is not unionized hence his job wasn't protected, CPOC let him down, etc

The moral of the story is that most people's political beliefs slant according to their current stake in life. No surprise people are always looking to benefit themselves.

Yeah, that hurts. But it can/will get worse....

1. The first time you realize that your income taxes are more than what the average family earns in Toronto/Canada

2. The first time you realize that your income taxes hit six figures.

3. The first time you realize that your income taxes could have paid for your dream car.

etc. etc.
It gets worse

1. The first time you realize that your income taxes are paying for a family that has no intention of working in Toronto/Canada

2. 3. The first time you realize that your income taxes have paid for someone else's dream car. Read CUPE

Variable tax rates always favour low income earners. Flat tax rates are the best solution to this problem.

Both rates favor low income earners (since in both cases it is a percentage, higher earners will in both cases pay more). The flat tax just favors them less.

Just do what Mulroney did. Hide it for 5 years and then declare it and pay taxes on only half of it. Fucking thief!

I don't see a problem with taxes favour low income earners. They need to keep a larger portion of their salary. I paid a little over $35,000 in federal taxes last year but that's fine becuase even with that I still make more than enough to live the life I want to. To get that kind of money from me under a flat tax system, would be brutal to low income earners. Even the proposed "fair tax" still punishes low income earners since it adds on an additional sales tax and there are ways for wealthy people to get around taxes on very expensive luxury items by buying them offshore. The progressive tax system is probably the best model currently.

Interesting that using the tax calculator show the tax rate for a $160000 taxable income is just under 35%. Death and taxes can't beat either!

I remember reading once that the top 50% of the wage earners out there pay 98% of all the taxes collected.

Don't know if that's true, but it wouldn't surprise me.

Most of the poor end up poor as a result of their own actions.
No....mental health issues are often implicated in their condition too, either diagnosed or, as is often the case, undiagnosed.

If my taxes went to the unfortunate one percent with Schizophrenia, the two percent who suffer from bipolar disorder, etc etc., then I would gladly pay them. The problem is that it goes to bloviating, self-absorbed fuckwits who scratch the anal cavities of our esteemed members of legislative assemblies across this grand country of hewers of wood and drawers of water.

way out in left field
Becuase a tax rate of 35% on someone earning $30,000 a year is a lot harsher than a tax rate of 35% on someone earning $130,000 a year.
Well, on average we're paying almost or slightly over 50% now so how is 35% harsh? I think it is june 20th or something where we finally start "earning for us".......

There have been numerous studies on flat taxation and it is universally acknowledged that with a simple tax system in place, a tremendous amount of reduction in government would occur therefore tax levels could actually be reduced.

If you really want to get pissed I guess you don't know about the feds silver lining: once you served your term, no matter how short, you get a pension for life. Even if you only serve 1 yr, you still get it. Not like the real world where you have to work years plus age....

.
I pay 6 figures every year. What hurts is some a**hole who pays $3 thousand a year in taxes jumping up and down, claiming moral superiority and yelling that the Government was wrong to lower taxes and that we should raise them so we can afford to bail out GM and the CAW.

More & more reason why anyone who pays what they "owe" if they can get away with not doing so is a damn fool.....

It's not "cheating" if its right & not getting caught in this instance is pure gravy...

It can't hurt that much if your income warrants a tax grab of six figures.
it actually is that bad. if ur getting taxed at six figures..chances are...you worked your ass off in life...possibly paid out of your ass in school fees...and or possibly took the risk to start your own business. people who make a higher income really shouldnt get screwed over as much as they do. when the taxes get to the point where your losing half your pay checks....its honestly pretty retarded....i can understand maybe a 35-40% cap..anything over 40% is just plain rediculous.
