My buddy from the states (in the army, got back from Iraq) asked me.
I mentioned our troops in Afghanistan, but that was it.
I never gave it much thought. lol
What do we really do throughout the world.
I'm guessing peacekeeping missions through the UN?
Anything else?

Contributions for almost every single UN mission in the world, Vimy Ridge, 1/3 of the entire combined force at D-Day was Canadian, single handed liberation of Holland during WWII. Walk into any airport in the world and see the treatment you get when you flash a Canadian passport, right through the line

Ask your buddy if he knows where Canada was during the first two years of both WWI and WWII ... then ask him if he knows where the USA was during the first two years of both WWI and WWII.

Answer: Canada was fighting for freedom of others against real threats; the US was sitting it out because they didn't think they should be in a war that didn't directly effect the USA.

Lets be fair here the US was itching to get into WWII, Britain and its Allies during the early part of the war would have had it alot worse had it not been for US, thankfully Japan gave the US an excuse to enter the war and bring their military and economic power.

The President was itching maybe, but not the Country or its people as a whole.

And the "help" provided before they joined the wars was "bought and paid for" help ... are the US "paying" us to be in Afghanistan to be used as targets for both the Taliban and the US airforce?

Great posts, but can you validate this with any website(s).
Another buddy of mine told me the same thing, but I don't remember specifics, but shit is the the most proud Canadian I know.

Anyone know of that secret mission by Canadian Special forces to help get American hostages out of Iran back in the 70's or 80's?

Canada's military forces, although always laughed at, serves a very special role in combat in many different parts of the world. Despite the quantity of our forces being scarce, we have managed to focus the training and produce specialists in combat operations. I believe it was a few months back when a Canadian Sniper Team executed the largest single sniper campaign in history while in Afganistan.

Canada serves many roles in peace keeping and relief efforts. This is probably in direct relation to us being so damn nice.

With that said, we also introduced the world to Nickleback. :(
