I was driving down spadina ave on Friday afternoon. Stopped at a light and a panhandler with displayed a sign that said "smile if you masturbate, can you spare some change?". He was walking around the cars while his dog was at the corner.

Panhandlers - my one weakness.

By this I mean that I am usually a compassionate nice guy - I try to be understanding of the underprivileged, and usually contribute. With panhandlers, I want to put on skinhead boots and kick their heads in.

Clearly he got your attention. Nailed you perfectly. So how much change did you spare when you stopped grinning?

Do the following:

1. Ask him for cash before he asks you.

2. Repeat the following mantra "Change? change is good"

3. Ask if he accepts debit, credit or paypal

4. Offer to buy him some food. I've done this many times and my offer was refused.

It takes a lot for me to give to a pan handler, even ones that look like they are in bad shape. They may look like they are in bad shape because they need a fix. I have bought food for people down and out, especially if they are rummaging around garbage cans for food scraps.
I saw an old guy trying to get a few scraps out of a McDonald's garbage can on one occasion, I bought him a full meal so that he could eat inside where it was warm.

everyonce in a while i offer a homeless guy dinner cuz i like to hear the story. last time i rolled up on a guy and asked him if he wanted something to eat and he said "i am not sucking your dick for a burger" i laughed, like full belly laugh till i snorted. told him nothing like that, just dinner and a conversation and he jumped in my car. after dinner i asked if he needed a ride anywhere and he said "ya take me home" and started to laugh said thanks for dinner and walked away.

One of the few things that would be less appealing than a BJ from a homeless guy would be a BJ from a homeless guy who insisted on eye contact.

the funny thing, when i go to a bank up here and get my cash changed from canadian to american i get the right value of the $ when i am in the states coming back and i switch the money over i get what they want to give.

rough but not real numbers. i give 200$ canadian to the bank get 210$ roughly, i gave the american bank 200$ american and asked for canadian and after a lot of confusion i finally got 180$ back. seems odd considering ours is worth more.

US Banks and Banksters are the worst place to exchange currency. Republican Banking 'deregulation' now allows Our banks to rip you off at will!....

I always changed currency in Canada.

That's not odd. You should get back fewer Canadian dollars for given amount of American dollars.

i did it once at the bank and saw how they treated it and how i got fucked so i said never at the u.s bank again and decided on the duty free, same fucking story. so now i just wait till i get back. thought about opening a u.s bank account and just leaving 500$ in it since i am down there so much but then i saw the shape of the banks and changed my mind quickly.

what are you talking about ? i know i should get fewer back but not to the extreme they do, 200$ is 210$, 200$ american is 180$ canadian, there is an extra 10$ they took off cuz they could and refuse to see that there $ is worth less than ours.

Typical story but you are so fucking full of shit.

Nobody rummages around looking for scraps of food in garbage cans. There are so so so many places street people can get a meal, and they all know them all.

Quit being so sanctimonius about drugs versus food.

Ever heard of palliative care or harm reduction?

These unfortunate people on the streets have a relatively shitty life. Many have drug and alcohol addictions. In the best of times, "normal" middle class and rich people have a hard time kicking these addictions. Imagine how hard it is when the only thing that makes your day bearable is getting drunk or stoned?

Fuck it, if the person catches me in the right mood, I'll give them a couple bucks. I figure that if they use it to buy booze, cigarettes or drugs, at least they didn't smash and grab something through a car window.

And their miserable life is just a little bit more bearable for a short time..
i am more inclined to give them money if they are honest about it. i seen a guy holding a sign that said "i need a beer" i threw a 5 down for him. seen a few guys with some creative signs that made me laugh, well i didn't see them personally they were pics on the net but it was some funny shit, if they can make me laugh i throw down, just for the giggle.

Hehe, I ran into him as I was coming down the block from one of my regulars. Couldn't help smiling, just the same ;)
