No, I don't watch TV news magazines.

One time on The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Ted Baxter introduced himself to an old lady, who said "I don't watch TV. I have a fireplace".
Another booze for the ignore list. Such a great function.

I can see a young naive student falling for this
Everyone engaging in this knows what they're doing.

This is a form of sexwork called "survival sex" where a person trades sexual favours for shelter, food, clothing and basic necessities needed to live.
Doesn't ring true. Men that are in "survival" mode don't have the choice of trading sex for necessities yet they survive.

In Canada, nobody has to trade sex for survival.

The entire prospect of trading sex for a place to live scares me and my main concern is for the safety of the young woman who is at the mercy of an older man, as most are looking for young females.
If I were a woman of any age I'd be concerned for my safety being at the mercy of a man regardless of his age.

Which is why I'd skip these ads and opt for traditional legal housing arrangements.

Totally agree I would say it's the landlord who usually messes these type of arrangements up by not keeping his horniness in check and becoming too aggressive and asking for things that weren't agreed upon. The tenant is always more at risk in these situations so if a tenant is looking to do this type of arrangement she really needs to do some due diligence of the landlord. It might not be the best idea to find someone off Craigslist lol. These arrangements probably work better when both parties know each other from beforehand and it's more a fwb type arrangement.
I agree. FWB and sugarbaby relationships are very common, including the benefit of free rent.

A major difference in the sex-for-rent examples reported on the CBC is the context - the arrangement is made before any history between the parties has been established.

Men (including heterosexual men) in fact do trade sex for money and shelter, their clients are predominantly other men. What world are you living in?

Straight men do NOT have sex with other men for money or shelter, unless they're drug addicts, in which case they've lost their sanity.

And women do NOT offer random men money and shelter in exchange for sex exclusively.

I wonder how many women in the 'vulnerable' age bracket for sugar baby scams watch anything on CBC.

The CBC is, and has been for decades, the #1 rated tv network among the 'rural Canadian pensioners who don't have cable or a satellite dish, and go to bed every night
at or before 10 PM
'. demographic.
It unlikely that these woman and I act many Canadians watch anything on CBC and definitely not Marketplace. CBC has several gems on TV and radio but has a small audience and is not for profit and survives only because it is underwritten by the taxpayers .
The vulnerable women responding to these ads are contacting these landlords online or by word of mouth from their friends.

If the women agree to provide sexual serves the they are agreeing to be sex workers and are exposing themselves to several potential unpleasant rabbit holes and the landlords to conviction under Bill C36 although no convictions ever occur.

The strong social safety net in socialist Canada guarantees that nobody has to become a prostitute for basic survival of food and accommodations but they are no shortage of landlords who will exploit a vulnerable tenants situation.

The current worsening economy will increase these arrangements which are essentially as old as time.

It should be legal and they can both sign a contract to make sure everything is above board. The show was a joke because it just tried to demonize the landlords. Why shouldn't 2 consenting adults make a deal for services rendered and accommodations?

I guess it’s a good thing that you clearly have no idea what some people women AND men have to do to survive even in Canada .

This is not something I expect most of the people on this board to know about or even let themselves think about much.

Provide some examples of these people, something more than "I've heard over the years" or conventional wisdom.

Who are these non-junkie able-bodied adults that must have sex for free rent in order to survive in Canada?

Give us the story about the straight man who declared that he had to have gay sex for free rent in order for his survival in the harsh Canadian landscape.

They eat out of trash cans, they sleep outside in the snow when it's -15, they stand on a median getting abused begging for change...people in those situations will degrade themselves sexually to survive.

I'm not going to tell you how I know but I use to work with the homeless/street people and there are a lot of ugly stories of the vulnerable population and predators out there.

The homeless people you describe are addicts or mentally ill individuals that prefer living on the street. The non-addicts are not having gay sex in exchange for free rent, and nobody wants to touch them with a 10 foot pole nor is anyone going to allow them into their home under any condition anyway.

NOBODY in Canada has to have sex for shelter.

The argument that there are adults in Canada that have to partake in sex for shelter is as ludicrous as the CBC report that women agreeing to have sex for shelter are automatic victims rather than consenting adults.

Baseless manipulative narratives.

Give me the evidence.

In Canada's 158 year history, give me a single example of a straight male that had to provide gay sex for shelter.

In Canada we have a wide array of social safety nets in lieu of a job, family, friends, friends of friends, neighbours, charities, etc.

We're not a Third World country... yet.

Beyond drug addiction or mental illness, explain why any straight man has or would have gay sex in exchange for shelter.

The flippant "you don't get it" and "it happens" replies don't cut muster.

Frankly, a functional straight male in dire straits that somehow could not find any means of shelter using the above methods would rather rob a store and get sent to jail where he'd have shelter and three meals per day than go gay.
