I can't say that I loved the moive but it was interesting

http://imdb.com/title/tt0080120/

To me it seemed as if it were done by someone with no knowledge of gangs
The remake is in production right now, with Tony Scott directing.
Why do I think it's going to be even worse...? At least the original was kitschy-fun.

LOL! Nice quote!

(But the word they used is actually spelled "Chazzer" - Yiddish for pig.)

No one mentioned "Once Upon a Time in America". Has anyone other than me seen it? It's worth the rental.

Not "the best" ever, but definitely two very good gangster movies any cinephile should see...
Sergio Leone's last film. And Bob Hoskins' best role ever.

Really? This movie just didn't end. It wasn't all that great to begin with (even though the story itself is good) and it just dragged on and on. And while I like James Woods... not that great of a gangster.

In fact, I am often disappointed that there isn't one GREAT gangster movie set in that era. I'd say that Road to Perdition is certainly better than Once Upon a Time in America, but still leaves too much to be desired. The Untouchables is... well... hard to consider a gangster movie to begin with; much more of a police story. Though one has to love DeNiro in it. The beginnings of both Lansky and Bugsy deal with this period allright, but progress too quickly. There are good older movies in this period, like Force of Evil or (original) Scarface, but... not quite right. Ultimately, I think the absolute best treatment of the period was from Godfather II, even though it was set in two different time periods. The DeNiro storyline of II could have been a movie on its own...

Yeah... I guess Goodfellas has to top the list, with I and II in a close second and third.

I would say all of the above, and just a couple of honorable mentions:

Miller's Crossing and
Bugsy Malone

Miller,s Crossing is right.....the great scene where John Turturro is begging for his life on his knees in a forest...

Loved the 1930's Chicago Movie "Road to Perdition".

Arguably the best cast ever. Paul Newman, Tom Hanks, Jude Law etc...

Along with the gratuitious violence, had a great story as well.

Road to Perdition is one of my favorites. Might even buy the DVD.

Casino is good.

I liked American Gangster too.

How could we get this far in a thread about ganster movies without anyone mentioning Get Shorty? Great cast with Gene Hackman, Danny Devito, Travolta, Rene Russo, Dennis Farina. Clever writing with an engaging plot. Well directed. Good soundtrack. And best of all, it is hilarious. Not your typical gangster movie in that regard.

Yes another great film by Sergio Leone with James Wood and DeNiro. I saw the movie in its original in release in 1984 at the theater at 139 minutes. Apparently it was released in Europe at 227 minutes and a directors cut at 229 minutes. Definately up there. I guess, I will have to revisit and wach again. I am told it is a different movie. Although, it is still not as good as his, "Once Upon a Time in the West".

An excellent movie with Tom Hanks in a role we are not used to seeing him in!

I am not a fan of ganster movies, of the ones I watched I like the chinese ganster movies such as:

Young and Dangerous Series
Internal Affairs (not sure you can classify it as ganster)

Chinese ganster movies are more stylish and not as gritty as western ganster movies, the climax of the movie usually means 2 gangs meeting in the streets with machetes(sp?), also usually the chicks are hotter and there tends to be alot of chicks.

In the book, the classic "Now go home and get your fuckin' shinebox!" scene is, like. one paragraph, with no dialogue, just an explanation that Tommy and Batts got in an arguement.
My favourite part is where Peschi says: "Do I amuse you? Am I funny like a clown?"
