According to a fitness research sleep deprivation has reached epidemic levels in North America. While eight hours of work, eight hours of play and eight hours of sleep used to represent the magic triangle of balance in a person's day, our current version is an isosceles, with the sleep side getting ever shorter.
Most people require between seven and nine hours. You should strive for at least seven; otherwise you risk perturbations in your hormone levels, like growth hormone, which seven hours tend to gain more bodyfat.

Well I get 5.5-6 hours on weekdays, and about 7-8 on weekends. If I get more than that I feel more sleepy. I don't how people can do 12 hours on weekends. If I did that, it would feel like half the day has gone by.

I'm the same as Bandit. If I sleep more than 7hrs, I'm either really sick or I got smashed the day before. I'm an early riser... don't like wasting the day sleeping esp. on a summer weekend when I want to be out enjoying the whole day.

I average 6-7 hours during the work week. I always tell myself that I will catch-up on the weekends. But even then, I rarely do more than 8 hours during the weekend. Don't know if it's due to stress from work, life, etc. The only way I do 8 hours during the week is when I've worked out at the gym that day.

During my university days, I could do 8-10 hours a night, no problem.

the best thing I ever did for myself was to start going to bed as early as possible and get up early. I now sleep at around 8 pm and wake up around 4:45...I have endless energy and feel great. Now that I have all my time to myself...all I do is sleep, eat, train and work...I like it...I ain't got much of a life, but, at least I look good and feel good.

Somewhere between here and there
Try doing rotating shifts and then being called into the office for an 8:00 a.m. meeting after working 7 p.m. until 7 a.m.

I am usually so wired

Normally I sleep 5-6 hours max on the weekend I try to take a snooze in the middle of the day. Max 2 hours.

it is not my research.
I just gave you some info. I've heard that a few time already from professional fitness specialists. Personally, I don't sleep enough. But I feel fatigue and tired very quickly. Having a few jobs and kids very poor exuse with time management on my side. I know one thing, if I can fix it, I have to do it now. There are many other side effects of sleeping disorders.... imo.

Sleep is great. I think this saturday I'll finaly have the chance to sleep in; probably a good 12+ hours. I can even go back to sleep with the sun in my face and construction going on outside my window.

p.s. yes half the day is wasted but it doesn't bother me if I have to do a half ass job cleaning (as Sherri Bobbins says).
