I bolded the important part. When Ford was elected he represented a huge majority and he was able to translate that into massive influence over city council. However, people who voted for him have turned against him, and he is now one of the least popular mayors the city has ever seen. This has emboldened his political opponents and he is no longer able to win votes on council without making deals with "the other side".

You're right he is changing the culture at city hall: It used to be about politics. Now it's a monkey show. Not with a special monkey either, that knows sign language, or can talk. Just a regular, ordinary monkey.

A police source told the Globe and Mail the mayor grew impatient and called the 9-1-1 service a second time, getting into a heated discussion with the dispatchers.

The source, who is familiar with the events, largely agreed with Mr. Ford’s account, denying a CBC report stating the mayor had called the dispatchers “bitches” and said “Don’t you f–king know? I’m Rob f–king Ford, the mayor of this city,” a phrase that has quickly become an Internet meme.

Mr. Ford also denied that he had identified himself to dispatchers.

“If they [CBC] would like to apologize I’d appreciate it, but, you know what, I’m not going to ask them for an apology.”

In a statement released Thursday afternoon, Mr. Ford admitted using the “f-word” at some point because the police weren’t arriving and he needed to be at City Hall.

The statement also said that “the same television network responsible for the comedy program published a report alleging that I made foul and derogatory comments towards the female 9-1-1 staff. That allegation is absolutely false.”

Not to mention many of the more traditional centre / centre-right types on council probably want their jobs back. Ford looks like a bad horse to hitch your waggon to. Even if his numbers turn around he seems like the type to hold a grudge, so he'll probably screw up getting his former allies back on side. Right now he's in a box, and it's mostly a question of harm reduction for everybody else.

I don't know (honestly). You should always take 'a police source' with a grain of salt (especially given the context), and given Ford's 'evolving' story there is no reason to believe that audio won't leak in some form and drag the story up again. Causing Ford to make yet another statement. Franky, Ford has something of a track record in this regard, so if I'm to err, I'll err on the side of him going on some profanity laden thuggish tirade, especially since he's been playing this true to form. This could have been handled, early, exactly as I described above, either to his advantage or in a way that killed it dead on day 1 (from a crassly political POV).

Assuming your question is not rhetorical... I suspect that people can't stand slick (read slimy) politicians that are only in it for themselves. Ford was the only choice other than Rossi. Rossi didn't have enough exposure or he would have won imo.
John Tory would be an excellent choice and he would likely win hands down now if he ran.
People of quality are less likely to run because we treat them like shit.

So let me get this straight, the same mayor who 1) has always had a near open door policy and has made his personal address (and cell phone) public and, 2) has high-profile barbecues with a heavy media presence is suddenly incensed when media show up at his door?

He was caught by surprise, didn't get his way (meaning the didn't media run away when he demanded) and repeatedly called 911 like a big baby.

So what happens if a truly catostrophic event occurs in Toronto? Does he call in the Army? (Oops.) Does he turtle and wait for someone to rescue him? More than anything, this event showed just how ill prepared and unequipped Rob Ford is to be mayor of a big city like Toronto. While I may not "like" Rudy Giuliani, his reaction to a real and serious event like 9-11 showed that he was able to deal with real situations like a real leader. The way Rob Ford handled a satirical comedienne speaks volumes to his inadequacies and unreadiness to deal with actual serious situations.

I was actually surprised that 911 calls are not public information. Perhaps an FIA request is necessary. Certainly, if 911 operators/police screw up and somebody dies, the recording of the calls would be "lost". just another example of where our public servants are not serving.

As for the incident...apparently new info has emerged. Go figure. It seems the piranha were lying, not Ford.
Some (reliable) sources that have actually heard the 911 tapes claim this...
- There were three calls
Call 1- Ford calling 911. No swearing, no calling anyone names.
Call 2- Ford calling 911 to see where in hell the police were. No swearing, no calling anyone names. No police show up (SHAMEFUL that the Mayor, who's number is flagged, gets no response from 911 given that he has had death threats on himself AND HIS CHILDREN-fucking pathetic). No thanks to the police, the coast clears, things settle and Ford leaves for work.
Call 3- Police EVENTUALLY show up at Ford's place. He is not there so they call him. Ford does not call anyone names but does exclaim, "This is fucking ridiculous." You know what? HE'S RIGHT!!!

- To the poster who claimed he knows that cameras won't show night as day. They CAN and DO make a scene brighter than the human eye is able to. To suggest otherwise shows your ignorance and/or your motive.
- His daughter was at the door and heard crying on the 911 call.
